My hospital sent out a chilling message that they will fire you or take away your medical privileges if you post anything on your personal social media on your own time that does not align with their (liberal) values. They said that first amendment protections do not apply. They said that they will do this even if you are not identifiable as their employee, and encouraged everyone to report any behavior of their co-workers that they were concerned about.
Welp, if you get fired at all, you can claim they violated your first ammendment, and give proof they said they do not care about protection of your first ammendment rights
Freedom of speech, as outlined in the Constitution, only applies to speaking out against the government. It is limited in scope. Maybe in this climate of fully politicized corporatiions, we will see a willingness of the courts to the expand this important right to employers like other 1st ammendment protections have been. What would be even better is if Congress did something about it and while they are at it, they should fix the Citizens United ruling.

In their message they say that freedom of speech prevents government from retaliating, but does not apply to a private employer.
In this case the hospital is a private, not-for-profit healthcare system.
