My wife asked me a few days ago if we could buy a cannon.

This reminds me of a post I saw on reddit a few years back.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended

Plus the wound is very difficult to close properly.

I need a bayonet.....

I actually own a fucking musket, my Dad made it when he was in his youth and teaching himself how to make guns. He gave it to me along with the powderhorn he handcarved.

Neither. I was disappointed that I had to tell her no. After explaining our property boundaries and the range of said cannon she understood. I told her we may be able to get a small cannon. She said "fuck that I don't want no pussy cannon".

Just get a regular cannon. Anyone says anything, remind them you're the guy with the cannon.

Shwishyshwa 1 point ago +1 / -0

a parrot rifle could still be a formidable weapon.

Alternatively, a punt gun would be splendid

1
Farmerbob1 1 point ago +1 / -0

Weren't punt guns like 11 feet long, and fire shot roughly equivalent to a 6-gauge shotgun? I think they were used in small boats for hunting waterfowl and taking down several at one shot?

You shoot the gun and the boat moves 10 feet before coming to a stop again, LOL.

2
Shwishyshwa 2 points ago +2 / -0

I've read down to 2-gauge but yea pretty much what you said. I'd settle for a couple those if a canon is off the table

2
Shwishyshwa 2 points ago +2 / -0

That's right. Strap that fucker to the roofs rack of the Prius for an emergency brake!

Cannons are fun to shoot but not suitable for everyday carry.

I swear to God we riot if the commies set Old Ironsides ablaze or we might as well just roll over and die

LexiconDevil402 28 points ago +28 / -0

You don't need to worry about it. They don't even know she exists.

Also, she's still a commissioned warship so good luck.

The ceremony where they turn the ship around is spectacular. I was lucky to see it about 10 years ago.

My dad got to go aboard for the turnaround years ago. One of the highlights of his life (WWII Navy man).

Want to know something:

When the Second Amendment was made, there are already, in existence, privately-owned warships packing enough artillery to raze whole coastal towns and villages.

So when the anti-second-amendment punks mentioned that no one should own an assault rifle because it is too powerful in the hands of private individuals, kindly bring this piece of patriotic trivia up.

One of my favorite books is "Six frigates" about the beginning of the US Navy and the USS Constitution is prominent and the most famous of the six.

4
Farmerbob1 4 points ago +4 / -0

Huh. Do the guns stay run out all the time, even when docked? Seems strange. Letting the guns stay out like that when not needed allows more water from rain into the ship, causing extra wear over time.

4
MadRussian 4 points ago +4 / -0

The ports have cutouts in them and are closed.

4
Farmerbob1 4 points ago +4 / -0

Ah, so the guns stay run out, but there are shutters in place that fit around the barrels?

That makes sense, I suppose. Wasn't aware of that. Learn something new every day!

The hull was made of white oak 10" thick and that's why cannonballs bounced off her sides.

I learn something new everyday! I had no idea there was a Live Oak tree out there. You may be right, she may have been made from Live Oak and not White Oak. Thank you for the clarification.

Farmerbob1 1 point ago +1 / -0

Aye, live oak is worse than hickory to try to cut with an axe. Google up some images of big Florida and Georgia live oaks. Note how wide their branches spread, and then realize how many hurricanes a 400 year old live oak must have survived with those enormous and long spreading branches.

Live oak is beastly to cut with a saw too, not just an axe. I was watching some videos on it just the other day actually - there is only one mill in the US that cuts live oak regularly because nobody wants anything to do with it except people building or refurbishing wooden ships.

I want a warship like that to take out on the weekends with the boys.

3
H_Guderian 3 points ago +3 / -0

Be wary, its in Boston. Who knows how long until the Mayor sinks it to appease the mob.

1
Farmerbob1 1 point ago +1 / -0

That's be a real good way for a Mayor to get arrested, sinking a US Navy warship.

Why was she known as old Ironsides? Cause she THICC!

2
LikeAWombatScorned 2 points ago +2 / -0

To the amazement of Dacres and his crew, the 18-pound iron cannonballs launched by Guerriere bounced harmlessly off the American frigate’s 24-inch triple-layered hull, which was made of white oak and live oak sheathed in copper forged by Paul Revere. One British sailor supposedly yelled out, “Huzza! Her sides are made of iron!” Thus, Constitution was christened “Old Ironsides.”

BoughtByBloomberg2 2 points ago +2 / -0

THICC AF!

KiltedTailor 2 points ago +2 / -0

Fun trivia; there is just ONE piece of the original ship left{as of circa 10 years ago when I was there] The whole thing has been rebuilt, one spar, one hull plank at a time. The interior reeks of the 1920's repair work.

As the old joke goes---"this is Genl Washington's hatchet; the head was replaced in 1880 & the handle was replaced in 1930, this is Genl. Washington's hatchet

2
Farmerbob1 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yup, that's the reality of old wooden boats. Over the centuries, you replace most of the bits and pieces.
