I work at a major University. Not Harvard, but you have heard of it. We had a staff and faculty meeting about "diversity" in hiring. The university General Counsel let her guard down and told us how they get around the federal prohibitions against discriminating by race, gender, and so on. Here is the playbook:

State that the University wants to support its "diverse student body" . Nothing illegal about that..

In every job posting, say that minorities and women "ARE ESPECIALLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY." Nothing illegal about that.

Require candidates to submit a "Diversity Statement " explaining how they would support a diverse student body (back to point #1). No problemo.

The hiring committee is told that they cannot take race into account in their decision, only the Diversity Statement. Of course not!

She added that if there is any discussion of the candidate's race, it should NEVER BE IN AN EMAIL or else the University could get in trouble. Oopsie don't quote me there!
So the whole purpose of the Diversity Statement is to allow Universities to hire based on race without explicitly doing so. The presenter joked, "Sure, I guess a Nordic guy could write a good diversity statement" but it was clear that they expect minorities to do better at this.
There's the playbook. You can thank the lawyers for this.
I am an astrophysicist at a 40,000 student university. It's exactly the same here.
I get 2-3 emails every week from my university president and the "Office of Diversity and Inclusion" (aka Office of Disability Services) about bullshit communist topics like:

The communists have a stronghold over academia that must be defeated.
