These included Hari Krishna cults, the Jim Jones cult, the Charles Manson cult, the David Koresh cult. The Heaven's Gate cult. Your use of the word bears no relation, either essential or contingent, to actual, real life cults. The word has become a dumb piece of internet lingo used to smear people.
