To give their point a fair shake, the civil war was fought over tradition (slavery) and radicalism (abolition). You could counter that it was fought over a true tradition of natural rights, in that men are not naturally born slaves, as opposed to the materialist ideology that people can be equated to property.
Fast forward to today, the comparison doesn't stand as well. While the Confederate flag is linked to slavery, it is also linked to regional identity of those who suffered under the "war of northern aggression." I doubt you'd find many rebel flag bearers who want a return to slavery or even segregation.
