I thought the point of having electors was so that If the president died before he could be inaugurated, Or no candidate received enough votes to win on the first round ballot, then the electors could vote for someone else.
The point as I understand it for having actual electors (instead of just having X weight by each state) is so that they have their own discretion to deal with various situations that may arise.
