As someone still in school, I don't want this online bullshit, and would fucking love this

77
The_Bloofy_Bullshark 77 points ago +77 / -0

Seriously, my wife was looking at handling a chunk of her degree online since a few of the universities were offering online degrees with the same credentials at the end as an in-person (ASU is known for doing this - your diploma just says BS [Field] as opposed to Online BS [Field]). Thought there would be some sort of lower cost associated with it... NOPE! Fuck that, not even bothering. Still charge around the same amount when you can learn the same stuff via MIT Courseware or whatever it's called. Hell, at this point, Udemy courses are more engaging.

If you were using their services on or before June 23rd, check for an email from them on that day titled "Supporting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion."

(How can I upload an image to this site so others can see it or embed it in a comment?)

Funny enough, their competitor, skillshare, also did it, but sent their email out weeks earlier, on the second of June.

What is Udemy?

15
Only_Rosie_ODonnell 15 points ago +15 / -0

https://www.udemy.com

An online learning and teaching marketplace

10
PepesCovfefe 10 points ago +10 / -0

Interesting. Does it offer accredited degrees? That’s what we need in order to move away from the brick and mortar leftist institutions.

7
Omgwtfbbq 7 points ago +7 / -0

It’s a website with ebooks and tutorial videos for a lot of subjects. It’s great!

4

19
Only_Rosie_ODonnell 19 points ago +19 / -0

There are lots of cheaper online options. You could get an accredited degree from many highly reputable universities on coursera. EdX has options for good classes too

9
RepublicRob 9 points ago +9 / -0

With major course work and no filler classes too.

6
Only_Rosie_ODonnell 6 points ago +6 / -0

Exactly. You get to focus on the major the entire time. Which helps with retention.

Community colleges are better than ASU.

9
MobileDev4Trump 9 points ago +9 / -0

I transferred from a Community College to a State University and the community college was a better deal, for everything but CS and Math classes. It was night and day how idiotic the social science teachers were at the state university compared to the community college. Almost all the community college professors were professionals who were just teaching classes on the side they had jobs and real-life experience unlike a lot of University professors who never worked a day in their lives outside academia.

3
booster 3 points ago +3 / -0

This is it, the community colleges are preparing for practical application. They also have only 2 years to do it and don't have time for a lot of useless electives.

6
The_Bloofy_Bullshark 6 points ago +6 / -0

Oh that was just an example of one that does this. Lol we would never pay for a degree from ASU... that school is just a pipeline to get into casting couch styled porn.

6
AlohaSnackbar 6 points ago +7 / -1

Western governors University is, as near as I can tell, the best value for an online degree. If ANYONE has a better recommendation I'm all ears, but WGU is what I landed on for a friend's .. ...... hypochondriac daughter.

6
ohwell316 6 points ago +6 / -0

I work in student housing near ASU. The classes kids are struggling with now were being taught in my grade school in the 60s. Bear Down Arizona.

9
Azrael14 9 points ago +9 / -0

Hell, at my university they charged more for the online classes. They tacked on a distance learning fee of $400 per online class

4
deleted 4 points ago +4 / -0
5
Flipbarryfromreddit 5 points ago +5 / -0

But you don’t pay room and board which is 10k a year. That’s the discount dude

7
SecondProtectsFirst 7 points ago +7 / -0

You still gotta live somewhere though. And working professionals pursuing an advanced degree don’t usually get to stay in the dorms anyway

29
deleted 29 points ago +29 / -0
25
Only_Rosie_ODonnell 25 points ago +25 / -0

You also don't get to use university resources like the libraries gym etc

9
HockeyMom4Trump 9 points ago +9 / -0

Then universities shifting to online better give back student activity fees, room, board, and charge everyone less tuition. It is not the same experience online. Labs are important. Interaction and class discussion is important.

8
Only_Rosie_ODonnell 8 points ago +8 / -0

I agree with you. But what are the chances of that happening. I guess if there's an outcry it'll happen

2
ClownTamer 2 points ago +2 / -0

None of the colleges here in the Bay are charging any less.

2
SantaBrown 2 points ago +2 / -0

My University, Tennessee Technological University, cut us a check after last semester for all the shit we pay for in fees but were not able to take advantage of because of Rona panic.

1
HockeyMom4Trump 1 point ago +1 / -0

Sounds like a good school with some integrity. I may tell my high schooler to give it a look.

17
booblitchutz 17 points ago +17 / -0

Depends on the course. Some courses it's way better. I hated sitting in giant lecture halls listening to some echoy adjunct mumble into the mic while 200 shitheads shuffled their feet and fucked with their notebooks (yes, when I was an undergrad we wrote ON PAPER).

If I had the option back then to take my dumbass Philosophy 101 course online, it would have been great.

In grad school I had the option for some classes and I loved it, but some classes you need that interaction otherwise if you get off track you're fucked and you get discouraged and its hard to focus.

7
Regnad_2720 7 points ago +7 / -0

I really liked the giant auditorium psych classes.

Of course my best memory of the classes was that one time just before mid-terms when this slacker dude had a big gulp cup full of Skittles or M&M's. And he fell asleep in the top/back row sometime during the lecture. When he flinched awake he knocked the cup away and the candies went everywhere.

Pretty sure I was the only person out of the 150 or so in the room that actually saw what happened and the only one in the room laughing out loud.

7
Magister_Caeli 7 points ago +7 / -0

I want an in-person class with a recorded lecture. If I have better shit to do then I can watch it later. If I want to ask questions I can be there. If I'm a 20-something year old cuck who thinks I'm gonna die if I get rona then I can stay the fuck home. Works for everybody.

7
DisgustedByMisleadia 7 points ago +7 / -0

Did you ever see the movie: "Real Genius"?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089886/

One recurring scene: Each time one of the students shows up for a class, more of the other students have been replaced with tape recorders.

Eventually, he is the only student actually attending class. Finally, the professor/lecturer/TA (don't remember which) is replaced with a giant reel-to-reel recorder, playing the lecture.

Per the trivia notes on IMDB, this (and other scenes) was based on an actual event:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089886/trivia?item=tr2742371

2
Magister_Caeli 2 points ago +2 / -0

Hmm gonna have to watch this

4
booblitchutz 4 points ago +4 / -0

That’s kinda how my grad school classes were, recordings of all lectures (of some classes) and the blackboard was captured with these digitally integrated pens so you could go or not, except for tests.

15
Magister_Caeli 15 points ago +16 / -1

Yeah. Online class is just all the stuff that sucks about school. If I wanted literally just classes I would want to pay way less. Why the hell would anyone pay to be stressed out without literally any other benefit of school.

27
MAGADragon 27 points ago +27 / -0

Think about all the elementary school students in bad homes, abusive homes, drug addict and alcoholic parents. School was their only escape, the only place where they could be safe and where teachers/counselors could recognize abuse.

It's already been tough for kids like that during the 3month lockdown we have. Imagine extending all the way into winter January 2021?

Liberals don't care about that. The thing I've learned is liberals really only care about themselves. They can't put themselves into other people's shoes.

"Oh I'm doing fine, nice house, nice car, nestegg, lockdown is just fun watching netflix! lol, why are you upset about the lockdown?"

They can't empathize that other people are not in such a fortunate situation, if their little world is ok then everything is fine and shut up conspiracy theorist!! Then they turn around and say they care about everyone and conservatives/patriots are mean!!

18
Magister_Caeli 18 points ago +18 / -0

10
ThePowerOfPrayer 10 points ago +10 / -0

I was working from home before all this went down and I'm not for the lockdown at all.

Personally, I haven't noticed a difference except that we're spending much less on fuel and eating out.

Staying at home all the time is no fun.

6
Magister_Caeli 6 points ago +6 / -0

Exactly. There are people that can stay home and not force others to

12
booblitchutz 12 points ago +13 / -1

Yeah, not to mention that in many of these homes the kids don't get fed properly too. The school meals are often the only good ones they get.

I'm not going to say I grew up in a welfare home, far from it, but when my parents divorced, there was a period of time there when my single parent was depressed or just not around and the only time I ate well was at school and sometimes my meal plan would lapse and I'd get called out in front of the class for it. It was so embarrassing, they would let me eat but still.

4
Raindrops1984 4 points ago +4 / -0

Our local schools have been delivering hot meals to kids each day, and large bags of food for the weekends.

4

You certainly shouldn't pay nearly as much for an online class. The fact they want to charge the same tuition is absurd.

32

Considering they thought, "Go to church = Not OK; Go to riot/looting = OK", they'll likely come up with another hypocritical rule. "CCP Virus doesn't affect people here on visas, so they will allowed to attend classes in-person. Any American citizens must remain in their basements in the fetal position, fully masked...being sure to send their tuition payments, of course."

7
HockeyMom4Trump 7 points ago +7 / -0

You know, if these universities are supposedly full of the brightest minds, can’t they creatively bring students back on campus with protocols in place...seems lazy to just give up and half ass it online and charge students massive tuition for sitting home on a laptop.

6
HockeyMom4Trump 6 points ago +6 / -0

Wow. Harvard of all places should be cognizant about the disparity in learning opportunities for students and want everyone on campus-some students go to Harvard from very poor neighborhoods. Others, extraordinary wealth. I would think woke Harvard would realize how online classes contributes to privilege and gives some students a huge advantage over others. Very surprised Harvard brains aren’t capable of coming up with a creative solution to return students to campus. Shame on lazy Harvard.

underthesmellybridge 14 points ago +14 / -0

BINGO.

This is a brilliant move that is absolutely the right thing for America. More importantly, it's not a new rule. Rather, it's a return to the normal.

The ICE press release (available here) explains that:

Due to COVID-19, SEVP instituted a temporary exemption regarding online courses for the spring and summer semesters. This policy permitted nonimmigrant students to take more online courses than normally permitted by federal regulation to maintain their nonimmigrant status during the COVID-19 emergency.

In other words, welcome to the real world.

My great grandfather came to Detroit, MI from Italy to build cars in Henry Ford's factory.

The whites and the blacks at the factory both called him "dago" and "wop" and made fun of him until he learned more than rudimentary English. He ended up buying a Webster's Dictionary and writing every single definition on paper 5 times and taught himself the language. He ended up learning to speak 5 languages fluently.

My grandfather told me those stories and preached the importance of self education in order to take advantage of the American Dream.

Why the fuck do we have a quarter million foreign students enrolled in our universities?

6
Stekky75 6 points ago +6 / -0

The answer is that we are taking the best and brightest from around the world and many/most of them will stay here after school. This is what they tell us and I believe its a fallacy.

I didn't go to an ivy league school but at mine, the foreign students seemed to cheat A LOT. Like, super obvious cheating that blew my mind they got away with. I was really liberal then but even I couldn't help wonder if this was so the test monitors weren't "racially profiling". Either way, many of these people graduated with me and are going to get jobs they have no right of getting. I hope most go back to their countries because I think the majority are going to be a impediment for the workplace.

they'll do it so they can college $15k in Room/Board.

Trade school local to me is telling students that all classes will be online only. What a laugh. How are you going to teach a 23 year old fuck up to bend conduit, weld a proper coupon, or diagnose an AC system on a car "online"? You have to do it to learn it and the safest place to get that access and instruction is at purpose built places we call schools.

We really will collapse our economy if the trickle of skilled tradesmen simply dries up. Who will repair your downed power lines in two years if there are no apprentice linesmen or heavy truck or crane operators in school now?

What a waste of a generation this is turning out to be.

Because it's one of the major reason that attracts non-citizens here in the first place, and that should be actively discouraged in every way possible. America First also means Americans First. ICE is racist and needs to be dismantled. They lock kids up in concentration camps. Oh sorry, that was under Obama's watch, got my presidents mixed up. I hope one day you gag on Michaels dick. He is a big reason why all this shit is happening. Fuck him, he belongs in prison.

Can we please not sticky articles that are not archived? We are giving clicks (revenue) to the purveyors of fake news. If the article is archived they do not make money from us. Stop enabling them.

I didn't realize how fucked up the comments are on the Hill's articles. It's a rino-lib-fest. May cause cancer

It's The Hill... mostly leftists, although I do appreciate Rising now and then.
