Someone's gotta teach all those Chinese kids so they can get high-paying jobs and spy for the communists, right?

Very sad, but very true.

Source: I used to work with Chinese kids and a big part of it was taking them on tours of ivy league schools. I was already red pilled, but this woke me up to how evil China really is.

Complete decoupling from China means no more Chinese nationals. These people come to the west, then go back to China immediately after graduating. They are just here to take advantage of the lenient system. There should be a work term requirement attached to international student visas.

Why? Have them come and pay to go to school, then go home and not dilute the job market for our people. It's a good system if you ask me, and even better if they cheat and can't deliver after they go back home.

The Chinese government uses their students paying exhorbitant tuitions to attend American universities as leverage to censor academic freedom and furthe the goals of the communist chinese party. Additionally, graduate students in valuable fields are used a spies to perform industrial espionage. Not a joke.

Not a joke. For real. They also use the Confucious Institutes for the same purpose.

The communist party uses its people however it can to further its own power. If you think a student abroad can just say "no" to the party - they make their phone calls and emails through your own relatives, who let you know they have an officer from the police or the party right there at the dinner table with them to do what the man wants or we are going to all be in trouble.

It is a Wokesters dream to do this shit to us. That totalitarian dream is a reality in China.

7
hit_backspace 7 points ago +8 / -1

It takes away spots from US students and in many cases, their tuition fees are a big portion of the university's revenue, driving up the costs for everyone else. Without them, post secondary education can be more accessible.

-1
jaysizzles -1 points ago +1 / -2

This really isn't true. As you say, almost all international students pay full price to attend US institutions. That means that universities have more money. A LOT of that money goes to subsidizing domestic students.

Are there probably a few students who don't get in because of increased competition from abroad? Maybe a few, but the real story is that universities have a lot more seats to offer and resources to discount tuition.

It's true that they won't spontaneously combust or anything, but like any massive organization that's grown too cumbersome while simultaneously making bad decisions, they are now in decline. GE is an example of this. The company isn't going anywhere, but it will never be what it was because it's leadership made too many poor choices and their employees aren't the same bunch of talented and dedicated people they used to be, just like Harvard's students aren't who they used to be either. If that idiot whiner Hogg can get into Harvard, what's the point of Harvard? This is just icing on the cake of their slow but steady fall from grace.

8
HockeyMom4Trump 8 points ago +8 / -0

Well said! Very true.

6
The_T-1000_Hillary 6 points ago +6 / -0

Problem is the whole ideology of too big to fail seems to have infiltrated the west on a whole, as with an irrational fear of trying and failing in general, the moment a corporation or other entity starts to go under you have someone in government stepping in to stick a pole up its arse, hook its heart up to an old battery and keep it going. As long as Trump is in I'm not so worried though.

I guess at least in Harvard's case they only really provide an education and since the pretence of doing that with any earnesty has grown thin employers will stop looking to them for grads, so it won't matter if they're still around by then, the damage will be done. It's gonna be funny when they sink to the level of community college as far as reputation goes.

2
Titanium 2 points ago +2 / -0

harvard provides a brand, not an education as the primary product.

1

They're intrinsically intertwined, without providing a good education the brand name suffers.

Yeah but Harvard (along with many other Ivy League schools) is a meet and greet for the nations elite.

It will always hold prestige for this reason alone.

10
I_Used_to_be_me 10 points ago +10 / -0

Yup, this is exactly it and the only benefit. I work and go to grad school at a less prestigious ivy, and the benefit is solely in its name and networking (and there are more resources but it’s not a huge difference from a solid public/state college).

The education is no better than what I got as an undergrad at a state university, but just the name being on my resume has opened doors; I get call backs for jobs I’d otherwise never have, and get opportunities to meet people and network with those I’d otherwise never have — things of that nature. There’s even some cool, but less significant benefits, like being able to email a well-known person and get a response back, just because of the word before “.edu.”

I’m no elite, so I don’t reap a lot of the same networking benefits as others here, but it’s still a big benefit (and admittedly a shitty scenario and massive scam, but still worth it if getting full or close to full scholarship/F.A.)

3
HntrBidensCokeDealer 3 points ago +3 / -0

J.s it’s easy to spoof an email address. Also saying that it’s highly illegal and punishable by years in federal prison, so don’t do it. But if you really wanted someone famous to notice you, you can probably trick them into thinking you are [email protected]

1

Eeeeeeh I don't know about that

I'm sure you can summon some arguments but Harvard is to education what Ferrari is to cars, Louis Vuitton is to fashion, Rolex is to watches, etc.

0
Sticky 0 points ago +1 / -1

Not a fair comparison as the you can measure the quality of the product such as a Ferrari or Rolex based on the engineering, materials, how it compares, etc.m

Just because you go to Harvard doesn't mean your brain performs like a Ferrari.

Ooh I was kind of right

University officials decided to allow only 40 per cent of undergraduates on campus in an effort to reduce density and prevent the spread of COVID-19. All freshmen will be invited, along with some other students who face challenges learning from afar.

They already have.

A percentage will still be allowed to attend in person. And fuck every American that needs in person, because it will be given to a foreigner.

2
jaysizzles 2 points ago +2 / -0

All first years are going to be able to take classes in person. The effects of this for undergraduates are minor. For graduate schools, nearly all of which were planning to be 100% online, this is much, much bigger.

1
HockeyMom4Trump 1 point ago +1 / -0

I disagree. My son s a college student. Last spring they went online and it was not nearly as good as face to face instruction. To pay college tuition and receive only online instruction is not worth it. It is a complete rip off and schools know it.

Holy cow! 21% of Harvard's students are foreign? That seems really high to me. They couldn't find any qualified American students to attend their school?

21
Sweetaco 21 points ago +21 / -0

International students pay much higher fees.

12
I_Used_to_be_me 12 points ago +12 / -0

Yup. My (not Harvard) Ivy (grad school at least, I’d imagine same for undergrad) is at least 21% international, likely more, and they’re all either incredibly wealthy European or middle eastern kids (like, top 1% in their country), or they’re Chinese nationalists here on their commie governments dime and constantly talking about how great ccp and China is. And there’s definitely more chinese students than any other intl demographic. It’s ridiculous and it’s gotta stop

3
jaysizzles 3 points ago +3 / -0

I dunno man. I, like most PhD students at ivies, am on a full ride. The master's programs are cash cows for the universities that allow that to happen, and a lot of low-income Americans to go to school for free. Americans never can never not afford to go to an ivy if they get in... So I understand the espionage risks, especially of PRC students, but the economics of it seem to mostly benefit American students...

1
I_Used_to_be_me 1 point ago +1 / -0

Sure. I don't see where your comment/response doesn't align with what I stated in my comment, though (unless I'm misunderstanding)? I was responding to a comment that stated how international students pay more; and then agreed, noting how all the international students at my school -- for that reason -- are either super-wealthy, or having their tuition funded (in large part, or fully) by their government

1
jaysizzles 1 point ago +1 / -0

Maybe I misunderstood this:

"It’s ridiculous and it’s gotta stop"

But my point is that international students, on the whole, are a net benefit to Americans and help subsidize the education of many an American that could not afford one otherwise. I'm all for cracking down on PRC BS (though I love the Chinese kids that use their time in the US to actually get educated about their home country...), but I'm nervous about the implications that this has for international students more generally, which I see as a positive US export--"45.3 billion in education exports, which supported over 455,000 U.S. jobs." https://www.trade.gov/education-service-exports

2
I_Used_to_be_me 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, I should have clarified -- I'm not saying international students needs to end, but there is a serious issue with the international students from China. Not all, for sure, but at least in my experience/at my school, it's a significant problem (in a number of ways)

1
Sweetaco 1 point ago +1 / -0

It boils down to a free market, they are doing what you should do in a free market so I don't really have an issue with it.

22
flashersenpai 22 points ago +23 / -1

the point of these schools, and in fact a large number of schools, isn't the quality of the degree. It's the quality of the name on the degree and the quality of the networking taking place at the college. That's why there's so many people hired in government from the same schools. They all know a guy who knows a guy.

Good luck forming those same level of insider clubs when no one can meet face to face.

There are unbelievable amounts of bullshit masters degrees that are exclusively marketed to foreign students. You will see entire masters programs where the entire class is foreign. Students view these programs as their ticket to a H1B. Universities view the students as an ATM. As someone hiring, one of these masters degrees is like a felony listed on your resume. I actually feel bad for any American students who get caught up in this credentialing scam. They literally incinerated their cash and made their resume less attractive.

I did get one American born Asian who completed one of these bullshit degrees at the behest of their parents wishes and on their federal contractors dime. The contractor could charge more for a masters degree employee and paid for the program. They said they barely put any effort in while doing a full time remote degree and still working full time at the contractor.

They might transfer to a less prestigious college with in-person lectures, but it's certainly going to make other universities think twice about not reopening. Wouldn't be surprised if Harvard changes their mind in a few weeks if they don't get some bitch ass judge to do an injunction first.

13
jimbad05 13 points ago +13 / -0

This is big if it actually happens. A lot of prestigious universities rely on those sweet, sweet out-of-state tuition dollars from international students. A lot of universities have satellite offices in China and recruit students directly from there.

Tuition from international students funds SO MUCH of the of the insanity and bloat in higher education. Universities are missing out on sports revenue due to COVID, they're losing a lot of international tuition, and they'll be facing increasing calls from their domestic students to cut tuition rates. I can't wait!

GEOTUS does it again!!! He wants schools back in session in the fall, WITH people attending in person, so for colleges, he uses ICE to kick every foreigner attending school here OUT if they don't find classes they can attend in-person. He understands that classes will be limited and actually puts the pressure on the schools themselves to restart in-person sessions, and if they don't, they'll risk losing out on foreign revenue and a potential PR nightmare. Once Universities bulk, he effectively eliminates any leverage K-12 might wield; it's a win-win for our "Art of the Deal" President!

So there is limited on campus housing available, I absolutely believe that part. But keep in mind there is no limit to off campus housing except perhaps the length of the commute the student is willing to perform each day they have classes. The real limit at Harvard will be how many physical classrooms will be holding classes and the capacity of those classrooms. If Harvard is completely buying into the hysteria despite the ever shrinking number of CV19 deaths then they will absolutely lose a bunch of foreign students this year.
