that's $8.61/ton in today's dollars. Looks like take home was $36.27 - I'm guessing this was his pay for the week. In today's dollars, that would be $762.52

Considering he barely paid any income tax (if any at all) I'd say he was making pretty decent money. Not that I'd want to shovel coal for a living.

16th Amendment for the income tax was in 1913
