It never recovered from the blow dealt to it through the treachery of another supposed Christian state. You must be a Catholic apologist to be able to so casually dismiss what was done.

Half the reason that the empire was able to fend off other comers was due to the fact that the Byzantines earned their stereotype by being, well, byzantine. They had a saying: "better the turban of the Turk than the miter of the pope" so, they married their princesses to the Ottoman emirs and were thus able to get the Turks of the ghazi marches to fight on their behalf against the Sassanid Persians, the Akkoyunlu and Karakoyunlu Turkmen in eastern Anatolia, the Kurds and, yet again, the Venetians.

Once the Anatolian pacification was complete, the Turks bypassed Constantinople entirely and went into the Balkans to conquer the Slavs, Bulgars, Ionian Greeks, etc. because even though Constantinople's walls hadn't been breached with 13-15th c. technology, didn't mean that the Byzantines could rest easy--there were other European-side troublemakers to pacify. Indeed, when the Turks came back to their conquest of the city, they hired Venetian foundry and casting technicians to build them the cannon to do it.

Also, the Turks have been many things, but "savages" are not one of them. Savagery is what you're seeing in the Seattle/NYC area right now; and what happens in Chicago, well, every day. Don't let your anti-Turk/Muslim bias turn you into an irrational bigot--that's what leftists do, not us.
