The article has gained popularity recently because it appeared in a TED Talk by some guy called Eddie Obeng,* showing once again that TED Talks are responsible for the spread of intellectual garbage and superficially appealing, hyperbolic misinformation.
They cater to the "I am very smart" crowd cause it gives them the impression they are learning deep truths, but are instead being fed propaganda and they lack the critical thinking skills to realize that.
Have you ever listened to the TED Radio Hour? It's like a TL;DR of TED Talks. It used to be interesting and informative, then the very popular host Guy Raz got diversity replaced by cool name diversity hire Manoush Zomorodi.
The show has since suffered in quality and hosting.
Edit: Zomorodi is married to this guy who has contributed to BuzzFeed, Politico, Daily Beast, etc. no wonder the quality took a dive.
The body of text says it's true. Somebody wrote it. It claims the experiment happened. You have a weird definition of "no one"
*lol this "alpha" downvoted me immediately due to sore-butt syndrome but had nothing to say 😂 If you're downvoting fellow pedes for helping to provide facts, you are not an alpha and you're better suited for Reddit. Downvoting is for little bitchy babies
This story has been doing the rounds since 1996, and it has never been verified. It seems to have first appeared in a book called Competing For The Future by Gary Hamel and C. K. Prahalad, and by “appeared” I mean it was just made up. The authors never provided a source. None of the authors who have referred to the experiment in the past eighteen years have provided a source either. None of the appealing memes or infographics that describe the story now provide a source. Suffice to say, there is no source, because the experiment never happened.
This reminded me of an experiment my prof showed us in social psych. Same thing but with people in a doctor's waiting room. They have a group of people who are told to stand up every time a beep is played, and the one person not in on the experiment conforms. Everyone sees the doctor until it is just that one person and she continues to stand up at every beep. They bring in new people who follow her lead.
This is how people in military basic training are supplicated
Someone screws up and they are all forced to do pushups. Then they beat that guy up when the lights go out. Then they are all forced into total compliance
Although this story in particular may not be true, we can see the same experiment happening every day:
Once someone from the left reaches peak "wokeness" and thinks maybe things have gone too far, the rest of the mob beats them down.
When an impoverished black student focuses on their education and wants to make something of themselves, the other blacks make fun and degrade them so they can't get ahead.
This seems similar to the crabs in a bucket analogy.
My biggest gripe about any workplace has been "it's always been done this way." The best jobs I've ever had were ones where I was able to implement 'work smarter' procedures.
Masks are to help stop you from spreading Covid to other people. The mask won't protect you, but it will keep your air from spreading even further than it normally. Do you really want to give Covid to someone else would could die from it? Wear a fucking mask. Don't be like leftwing anti-vaxxer idiots.
You'll be wearing that mask FOREVER. Forever and ever and ever.
NEVER take it off. Coronaviruses, Rhinoviruses, and Influenza are not going anywhere. Did you wear a mask for H7N9, SARS, MERS, H1N1, 2009 Mumps, 2018 Super Flu? 80k-ish dead from the flu.. Look it up! No one gave a shit.
The Rona has a 99.6%+ survivabilty rate. If you wear a mask for a 99.6%+ survivabilty rate you will NEVER be able to take it off. There will always be something ever so slightly deadly to less than 1% of the population in the air.
Enjoy your new all-mask-every-day-always life.
If you think your random piece of dirty moist fabric will keep you safe, I support your right to wear it (where it is allowed). But I'm not interested.
If I don't wear a mask I'll get fined $100 and the company I work for will be fined $100. Not to mention the insane amount of public shaming the lefties would dole out. I'd end up unemployed. Shitty situation.
Masks are 100% USELESS. COVID is so small it goes through the mask like a mosquito going through a chain link fence. All you're doing is reinhaling the toxins your body is trying to exhale, making your immune system weaker. THAT is how you're going to get sick.
If masks work, why are they releasing prisoners instead of just masking them? Why is Harvard moving to online only classes the entire 2020-2021 school year instead of just masking students? Hmmm...
It's a cool scenario to consider, but doesn't seem to be true: http://www.throwcase.com/2014/12/21/that-five-monkeys-and-a-banana-story-is-rubbish/
Thanks newby. And welcome.
This is a GREAT pull quote:
People worship those fucking TED talks lol
They cater to the "I am very smart" crowd cause it gives them the impression they are learning deep truths, but are instead being fed propaganda and they lack the critical thinking skills to realize that.
They just keep on being smug uneducated fools.
Have you seen the ads for Master Class? Tony Hawk will teach skateboarding online in about an hour...
Liberals eat it up.
IDK...sounds kinda raycis to me.
Yes, true learning requires work.
TED talks is about 10% wisdom, 90% leftist propaganda. I even think Bill Gates was on TED talks
Is that when he released the mosquitos?

IKR low I.Q is real can't fucking understand the idea behind a message.

FAKE NEWS!
And this is why they want to replace white people with people with a much lower IQ.

Yup, makes sense
Monkey see, monkey do.

And with the addition of social media, all the "scientists" have to do is ring a bell to get the monkeys to attack one another.
PS: in regard to whether or not this story is true: who cares if it illustrates a valid point?
My biggest gripe about any workplace has been "it's always been done this way." The best jobs I've ever had were ones where I was able to implement 'work smarter' procedures.
Can substitute "Corporate Policy" into this. That's how I first heard it anyhow.
But we do know why we need to wear masks.

If they want to keep wearing a mask, fine. But us normal people who refuse to wear one shouldn't be punished or discriminated against.
If I don't wear a mask I'll get fined $100 and the company I work for will be fined $100. Not to mention the insane amount of public shaming the lefties would dole out. I'd end up unemployed. Shitty situation.
Thanks for the links.
Saved.
