I don't get the whole issue with that? I am Hispanic and also white... There are a lot of white families in South America. Especially in Uruguay and Argentina.
When I fill out government forms it asks if I am Hispanic or not under "ethnicity" and under race I cannot choose Hispanic, and 'White' is the most appropriate option under race. Not just "kinda appropriate" either. I am very obviously a white person, pale with blue eyes.
With Zimmerman it would be a lot tougher, since he isn't at all a pale person. But I do wonder what he would have to check under "race" on government forms. Like I said, Hispanic is not an option. Also, "brown" is not an option. He doesn't look very Black or Asian or Pacific Islander to me.... Perhaps they need to change the forms around.
No one in America was ever described by the media as a "white Hispanic" before. They were either white or Hispanic. When the media heard that a man named "Zimmerman" had killed a young black man, they were ecstatic that they finally had what appeared to be an unjustified white-on-black murder they could use to inflame racial tensions and promote anti-white hatred, which is their obvious agenda to those paying attention. When they found out he was Hispanic, rather than let the opportunity go to waste, they cast him as a "white Hispanic."
I don't get the whole issue with that? I am Hispanic and also white.
The issue with that is that Zimmerman wasn't white by any stretch of the imagination - except for the press photos that were digitally altered to make him look whiter.
I guess the people who run mainstream media must hate white people, or intend to incite racial violence. Probably both.
That's very true. I agree that I would not call Zimmerman a white person at a glance.
However, I do wonder what he could be better classified as, using the options given on government forms. You have to choose a race, and Hispanic is not an option.
Which of the following "Races" would you check, if you were him?
-American Indian or Alaska Native
-Asian
-Black or African American
-Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
-White
Those are the choices. And then in a separate box, called "Ethnicity" you have the following choices:
-Hispanic or Latino
-Not Hispanic or Latino
You see the problem? Almost ALL Hispanic or Latino people are going to have to choose "White" unless they have extremely dark skin and identify as Black. But there really aren't many Hispanic people that are actually that dark, and the other choices of race are even less likely to match very well.
He must be a white Hispanic /s
Hold up, hold up, I'm told that's not sarcastic at all, but real life.

"Zimmerman is a white Hispanic who is on trial for last year's shooting death of Trayvon Martin"
Ya, that was BEFORE they thought community led security instead of cops was a good idea.
Now they would totally support Zimmerman, I’m sure.....

Thanks for explaining the subtlety.
We definitely need better categories in the form.
