They are both true.

However, I grew up with the former.

Even as a kid, barely a teenager, we used to say that to each other: I disagree with what you say (or are about to say) but I defend to the death your right to say it. Or a variation of that.

I remember when Westboro Baptist Church were popular doing their thing and the general response was "well its freedom of speech". Nobody was trying to cancel any of them.
