Like I said here before, to the unhappiness of many, most of that fireworks show was normal, and most of it is Mexicans with illegal Mexican fireworks, not patriots giving the finger to Newsom.
Some in the region insist the show was bigger than normal. I think that's wishful thinking. Sure wasn't where I'm at. In fact, the show around me, in the eastern portion of LA Co, was subdued compared to five years ago, before the Sheriff's started writing big fines for anyone caught with illegal fireworks.
The good news is that a lot of people, however, did ignore Newsom and Garcetti and hold their normal 4th of July parties. I saw three decent sized house parties on my block, and a fair number of people out on the streets congregating, drinking, and blowing off their works.
I think the thing with the masks is that you only have to wear them really when you go into stores. So, the vast majority of people say, "Whatever, I'll put on the mask. Don't hassle me." They don't see it as a psychological device to control people and make them fear the virus "until a vaccine is discovered". The vast majority of people aren't going to hit on let alone appreciate that kind of abstract objection to masks.
What's insane is fireworks is possibly the best and only way to mass celebrate something WHILE keeping your distance. You don't need to gather in crowded spaces to see fireworks in the sky. You can have an entire suburb set off a ton of fireworks, all enjoy it, and still keep physical distancing.
But those who would bar things like fireworks don't do it because they care about the actual physical distancing anyways.

it's harder to go after a hundred people lighting off fireworks at night than it is to just see someone not wearing a mask and hand them a ticket
If they don't, they are fined $1000.
