Goes double for money made from research patents. I have no problem with private schools retaining patents from research and making scratch - but publicly funded research isn't a closed IP vault. That's public. There's been a lot of bullshit squeaking by there (through funneling research into black-box secondaries for publishing etc) on the taxpayer dime instead of providing data for entrepreneurs to manufacture domestically. In fact, it seems China has been snagging most of that - illegally.
It's another reason Japan and other countries are getting out of China. The CCP requires copies of all IP manufactured there to be handed over to the govt.
If we put the squeeze on US companies for disseminating IP with the CCP - there'd be a huge uptick in domestic manufacture.
That's why there NEEDS to be a new Cold War with China. It's not just flowery language. It's a necessity.
Get rid of predatory student loans too. Studies departments would vanish overnight. Nobody would be willing to pay for that themselves. Also would instantly stop the student loan debt crisis. No more debts studies folks can’t pay off.
You notice how you said, “pay for that themselves?” That’s the problem. When you take out a loan, you are still supposed to be paying for it yourself...you are not supposed to get money for school and then complain about having to pay it back.
In their defense, they’re usually 17-18 when making the decision, and were raised to think that if they didn’t have a degree, any degree, they’d die young and poor on the street. That hobos are the ones that didn’t go to college. They’re not even old enough to drink but they’re old enough to take out 50-150k loans? I feel for their position. They’re kids and they’re being taken advantage of. It needs to stop.
To play against that narrative, you have to fill out that FAFSA every year. You have to look at how big that loan number is and review every year. You can make some pretty big financial mistakes no one will bail you out of that are predatory at 18 not related to student loans. I don’t hear anyone begging to bailout every teenage soldier/marine/sailor offered a loan at 12+% on a 70k truck while getting E1 pay. At 18 years old and year 1 you may have no sense and fall for the debt trap, sure. Years 2, 3, 4? Sorry Charlie. You had 3 Mulligans and I’m not buying it!
I don't diagree, but I do wonder why financial literacy is not talked about in schools or homes. My boys knew early on what a loan entailed, how interest works, etc. Even as little boys my sons would have known that if they took out a loan for thousands of dollars that was money they had to pay back. I don't buy the "they are 17-18 years old and don't know better" routine. I think maybe the best option would be for the government to get out of the loan business. If a student can't afford college they could attend a community college, work, or go to a private lender. The government should not be guaranteeing loans to anyone that wants one.
I went to a top tier University and got a real degree, but I got it alongside many friends that went there and got Wikipedia degrees. How things go for those people varies. Most start off in a real degree or exploring, and the real degrees are too hard, they can’t make the cut to get in, or they just hate it. Then they’re still in school having paid all that money and will feel and be seen as ‘college drop outs’ if they bail. Their whole lives before then were also spent trying to get into set top tier school, and being told they have to get a degree.
They ‘explore’ or are forced to take a breadth requirement, like ‘Erotic Literature,’ or ‘How Penises are a Social Construct’. They like it and find it interesting, and are told plenty of those folks have good careers. That’s usually a lie, but I have known some with ‘good careers’ here in the Bay, which they largely got by dating someone with a real degree that hit it big or something similar. Or they stayed to teach it and wrote provocative books on things the equivalent of White Fragility, but that’s rare. Some also are told they can get their debt relieved if they work in nonprofit for a while. The school’s also naturally tell them things will be fine along the way, because they are salesmen in disguise.
There’s also the person that grew up trying to get into college and doing what their parents said, then go to college and get a Wikipedia degree as a big ‘fuck you’ to their parents.
Lots of situations, but it’s usually some poor kid being strung along and lied to or indoctrinated and scared, not a rational person of their own volition deciding that a studies degree is worth the $150k financial investment.
I would argue that one of the problems with American education is that you have a lot of people in college who have no interest in what a college should be, nor is there any reason they should.
If the government would slash the amount given to students in the form of student loans we could end this subsidy of the radical Left. There's no reason a degree in history should cost as much as a degree in chemical engineering, or that either should cost 250K, 90% of which comes in student loans from the government that goes to these schools.
Nope, most of the problem is the idea of college as "job training." It's not. Employers outsourced their training to colleges and it's been a disaster.
Eliminate PELL grants as well. The government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers.
If you can't afford college, look for private scholarships and grants, or take out a non-government loan if you think the benefit is worth the cost.
It used to be the case that a student could afford a college education by simply working part-time. Pop the bubble and we can return to reasonable costs. Or tear down the entire system and rethink education.
Except Madrassas isn't commonly known. I'd stick with simpler language such as 'Cult' or 'China'. The latter is a legit threat to national security so it'd have legs.
Well that'd certainly be a big part of it too - yes. Universities during the Cold War didn't accept funding from the CCCP. They sure as hell shouldn't be taking it from the CCP now. National Security pretty much demands it.
There have been a number of reports of kickbacks for certain professors and deals with other universities for certain laboratory support. Their thirst for money will increase significantly and they just better be prepared to find and sever these kinds of illegal or semi-illegal funding sources too.
I've had two kids go through University, and one finishing up. 1. Commute, there is no value in going to "elite" universities. 2. Take as many A.P. and dual enrollment classes as you can in High School. 3. Unless you're on a full scholarship spend two years in community college.
The Marxists exist in the general "education" requirement classes. English, History, Psychology, Sociology, Foreign Language, Philosophy, and the entirety of the Fine Arts. If you are going to college for any of these degrees, you're wasting time and money. If you're there for STEM, as you should be, it is possible to avoid all of those general "education" required courses, I know because my kids did it, through dual enrollment and AP courses in high school.
IMO, easiest thing to do is to stop federally backing any major that does not have a good ROI for the student. So if the women studies majors are making 25k/year working at starbucks 5 years after they've graduated then it is time to drop those types of majors from federal backing. That will force those students to basically not study those majors anymore and thus people won't be brainwashed.
De-funding Universities would create economic growth by having average brained students acquire real world skills instead of another person with a BA in gender studies etc etc.....
"Let's just retreat more from powerful institutions and come up with fantasies of destroying it while we actually do nothing in reality" -Conservatives on higher education every time
If goes deeper than that. The financial investigators John Moynihan & Larry Doyle have all the dirt on the Clinton foundation. The Clinton foundation sparked an ecosystem of non profits that peddle influence and scam over a trillion dollars a year from various aid organizations. This non profit ecosystem includes all the major universities. When taken in this context it's easy to see why all the universities are promoting Marxism. They are all complicit in the scam of defrauding the public of dollars. They are all beholden to the Clinton foundation and as such need to promote these Marxist policies so they get their scammed money
Federal online school everybody. Think of the cost savings...no expensive real estate, costly administration....reusable lectures, homework , exams...create a curriculum in coordination with corporate America in order to assure that graduates have marketable skills.
I read this morning that Harvard and MIT are suing to prevent foreign students from losing their visas to "attend college in America" if colleges provide "online only" classes.
When they win I will officially launch the online-only MAGA UNIVERSITY, with tuition starting at a mere $40,000 per student, a 20% savings over comparable institutions reflecting MU's low overhead. Instructors are welcome to apply by submitting a one-time $200 application fee to cover processing costs.
I went black pilled on the subject as I watched a bright ambitious hs graduate I was tutoring go from winning the most prestigious science award in the area to wanting to be a do-nothing teacher, live with cats, move to Canada and basically funnel the sponsorship money for living expenses over research. After cutting up xir's body ofc.
This forum is full of misinformed opinions and conservative fantasies of how higher education actually is. The vast majority of students at state schools are there for job training degrees (and still have to go into debt) and are either apolitical or conservative already. Sitting in a college class for 3 hours a week with leftist professor is only going to "brainwash" someone who wasn't raised with clear values to begin with anyway.
All of the "take STEM" people are deluded, sciences are vastly more corrupt than humanities that are poorly funded and have been declining for decades.
Is_Educated: America is dead last in most academic disciplines
America: Is one of the highest spending countries per capita on education
Really smart people: Maybe this money isn't being well spent.
Make them spend their endowments. They are supposed to be universities. Not a hedge fund, with a university as a sideline.

There needs to be a "Cold War" with some "American" companies too.
If this was reddit I would 100% expect that and have tagged it with /s lol
You know how research works at many universities?
In this case, Company B might even be made of researchers from the University.
100% agree. The muck is so deep in how research patents are handled and who profits from them, we would need Hercules to clean out the stables.
You hit the nail on the head.
Get rid of predatory student loans too. Studies departments would vanish overnight. Nobody would be willing to pay for that themselves. Also would instantly stop the student loan debt crisis. No more debts studies folks can’t pay off.

There's the money for reparations. Taken from the gatekeepers of the patriarchy no less!
Want to clean up the education system? Get the government out of education. Leftism isn't economically sustainable.
College should not be subsidized by the government.
Yale $39,000,000,000
University of Texas $29,000,000,000
Yale is private and should get $0 in tax's breaks. Research money should be much more difficult to attain for all universities and colleges.

Hell, do a moratorium until Universities are audited. Recall existing loans too. That'd get their attention.
For a particular degree, a university should be required to guarantee a minimum salary in that field.

Defund the Madrassas would be an even better slogan. These are radical religious indoctrination camps, and that false religion is marxism.
Except Madrassas isn't commonly known. I'd stick with simpler language such as 'Cult' or 'China'. The latter is a legit threat to national security so it'd have legs.
Only if you prevent China from also funding them more.
Well that'd certainly be a big part of it too - yes. Universities during the Cold War didn't accept funding from the CCCP. They sure as hell shouldn't be taking it from the CCP now. National Security pretty much demands it.

Can you imagine how many idiots would be forced to find real jobs?
Can you imagine how many "scientists" performing ridiculous, indefensible experiments would be forced to find real work?
Defund and use the money to rebuild statues and monuments. They're the ones that egged it on to begin with.

Keep faith pedes! This is gonna be one hell of a pendulum swing from the left wing socialist/cancelculture/ pc bullshit.

When kids use boot camps to get the education they need for good paying jobs —- the idea of publicly funded schools is starting to get ridiculous.
I like that idea.
Yup. Let economics do its job.

universities are just far left training camp cesspools at this point and serve no purpose
just completely defund, clean house and rebuild them to be institutes of higher education again but this time with safeguards and regulations
Unpopular opinion but we have too many universities. They suck up way too much money.
Federal online school everybody. Think of the cost savings...no expensive real estate, costly administration....reusable lectures, homework , exams...create a curriculum in coordination with corporate America in order to assure that graduates have marketable skills.
Billions and billions and billions and billions and billions....
Research grant too.
Amen!
Banning all of the Mandarin Institutes wold be a good start.
DEFUND UNIVERSITIES
Not to mention that itll lower tuition costs
Get the government OUT of the education business. Get all governments out of our education business.

Should be too post for a month.
Don't need them. Academia is not an industry that produces any tangible good or service.
It used to. It needs a major course-correction (to coin a phrase).
