You're right. A mask will stop germs from leaving your mouth or nose from getting into the air.
The real question though is: is it worth it? Are all these lockdowns worth stemming the spread of a disease with a less than 1% death rate?
We could defeat the common cold if we all just completely isolated ourselves but it's not worth it. Small businesses are failing and people are losing their livelihood which is causing more detriment to people than if we had not locked down the country.
The fear mongering needs to stop and the mask is a reminder to be afraid.
No. Shutting down the economy wasn't worth it. Why? Look at the results! We only delayed the inevitable. I'm also not too concerned about the virus or it's complications due to the fact that most people who get it won't even get sick.
However, masks do work and there's a lot of gullible and scared people out there. If by wearing one I can help calm them down and get them back to work then I will do so. I think that $1,200 check was enough to get me to wear a mask and personally I think I look damned cool in one.
If you don't want to wear one then don't! Just feel free to not visit anyplace that requires you to wear one.

I'll wear a mask in stores and restaurants where it's mandated because those are private businesses and they make the rules. I'll never wear a mask on the sidewalk or on a public beach or in a public park. We have to show people there's really nothing to fear.

Masks do provide protection for yourself and others. Depending on what type of mask depends on the amount of protection.
I look awesome in a mask. I'm still trying to obtain a full face gas mask so I'll look even cooler.
