My ancestor who fought in the 28th Wisconsin, died like 4 months after Volunteering in 1864. He had a wife and 3 small children at home, i always wondered why he chose to volunteer for the war even though he was not conscripted. I think at the time the war had gone on for 3 years already, and he probably thought enough was enough, put an end to the war.
Reparations are ridiculous, i am the master of my own fate, and i will work for my own success.
Those orphans may or not have Rey a small payment. But they had no daddy. And now the decendents of those slaves have every door opened to them. Your ancestor should be resting in peace.
And yet.....
The war isn't over not for the Democrats. They have convinced some people to start it up again.
Everyone who wants reparations should chip and form a pot of money. From that pot of money they should research historical slavery, and then delineate racial victims versus the race of their aggressors.
Aggregate all the victims and all the aggressors, add 'em up, and see who owes who.
This is where the problem lies the people freed back then are back on the plantation today getting their hand outs so how can they afford to pay any one anything
If there’s to be reparations, it should be paid for by the blacks who captured OTHER blacks and sold them to the Europeans for slavery. We punish drug dealers worse than the drug buyers. Why should this be any different?
I’m named after my great grandpa who’s family moved here and he voluntarily served during WWII as an immigrant. He was there for the invasion of Normandy, do I get some reparations too?
the first ancestor who came to this fair land immigrated from Ireland to connecticut and promptly joined the union army to whoop some confederate asses. He knew what it was like to be held down by the tyranny of english. thankfully he made it out as his unit helped control New Orleans and other locations in Louisiana til the end of the war. Weres my families thank you.
The best part of any sort of reparations game will be when blacks suddenly discover that other blacks owned slaves too. So some of those blacks who expect to get a fat payday will instead be on the hook for reparations.
That should add a fun twist to it, lol.
I like reversing this question sometimes, and phrase it as: “setting morality aside for a moment, should slave owners have been compensated for the massive taking of their property by the Federal government? Why should the descendants of slaves be given reparations when they lost nothing, but not slave owners, who lost everything?”
We always look at the system of slavery with a 2020 lens (as we should), but if we were to place ourselves back in the 1860s this was a property rights issue, not a human rights issue, as fucking awful as that sounds today.
Should black confederate soldiers get reparations? (Liberal brains explode when you mention that many black fought for the Confederacy.)
What about Black Union Soldiers? Other than reparations for the statue they paid to erect, that was torn down by rioters, of course.

Exactly.

My ancestor was wounded multiple times. I demand reparations for that as well.

Race is just a social construct.... I for one am racial fluid.
My ancestors built the pyramids while being whipped only to survive and then be gasses by the millions by Hitler. Where are my reparations?
My.uncle died fighting to free the southern slaves!!! Where's my 40 acres and a mule?!?!?!
None.
Which is a higher number than slaves ever brought to the USA
More Union soliders died than there ever was slaves
It's all show for votes. Democrats run the multilevel marketing scams.
oh and black people who had ties to black slave owners should have to pay in
Plus interest accrued,...........
This is where the problem lies the people freed back then are back on the plantation today getting their hand outs so how can they afford to pay any one anything
The true cost of war... The millions of descendants the dead didn't have.

Great question.
Good Question!
