Please raise a glass for the best trail dog ever.

She's 15 and has the big C and we have to let her go tomorrow.

She has mountain biked, hiked, and beach walked with us her whole life.

Got her from a shelter at 6 weeks, she has slept next to my bed every night.

Border Collie are such a great breed.

We will miss her terribly but rescue again, dogs are so much easier than people 🥃

RIP good girl.

I will lend to you for awhile a puppy, God said, For you to love her while she lives and to mourn for her when she is gone. Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe for two or three. But will you, till I call her back take care of her for me?

CaptainWinston [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

We gave her a good life. Thanks.

IncredibleMrE1 16 points ago +17 / -1

So sorry, OP. You gave her a great life full of love and happiness, and that's the best any dog could "ask" for. They really are our best friends, and losing them is at least as hard as losing family.

I know I'll be mocked by some for this, but I truly believe we'll see 'em again on the other side.

God wastes no good thing.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunt_(The_Twilight_Zone)

Hyder Simpson is an elderly mountain man who lives with his wife Rachel and his hound dog Rip in the backwoods. Rachel does not like having the dog indoors, but Rip saved Hyder's life once and Hyder refuses to part with him. Rachel has seen some bad omens recently and warns Hyder not to go raccoon hunting that night. When Rip dives into a pond after a raccoon, Hyder jumps in after him. Only the raccoon comes up out of the water. The next morning, Hyder and Rip wake up next to the pond. When they return home, Hyder finds that Rachel, the preacher, and the neighbors cannot hear or see him, and are tending to the burial of both him and Rip.

Walking along the road, Hyder and Rip encounter an unfamiliar fence and follow it. They come to a gate tended by a man, who explains that Hyder can enter the Elysian Fields of the afterlife. Told that Rip cannot enter and will be taken to a special afterlife for dogs, Hyder angrily declines the offer of entry and decides to keep walking along the "Eternity Road," saying, "Any place that's too high-falutin' for Rip is too fancy for me."

Later, Hyder and Rip stop to rest and are met by a young man, who introduces himself as an angel dispatched to find them and take them to Heaven. When Hyder recounts his previous encounter, the angel tells him that gate is actually the entrance to Hell. The gatekeeper had stopped Rip from entering because Rip would have smelled the brimstone inside and warned Hyder that something was wrong. The angel says, "You see, Mr. Simpson, a man, well, he'll walk right into Hell with both eyes open. But even the Devil can't fool a dog!" As the angel leads Hyder along the Eternity Road toward Heaven, he tells Hyder that a square dance and raccoon hunt are scheduled for that night. He also assures Hyder that Rachel, who will soon be coming along the road, will not be misled into entering Hell.

Bless her heart. 15 years is a great life for a dog. Her love will live on forever through you, your family and the love you bring yourselves. Dogs are the best. My 11 year old buddy is snoozing behind me on my bed. Best teammate a guy could ask for. Rest in peace to your best friend and family member.

I'll drink for your puppers. Got my aussie shepherd/border collie mix when she was almost 2 and she stayed with me through a divorce and a round-the-world move. The saddest part of buying my house was realizing I'm one day going to have to pick out a spot to bury her.

This is the 8th dog in our 30 year marriage. Can’t stop, it hurts but life without dogs is not nearly as much fun.

Justdickinaround45 8 points ago +8 / -0

Sorry for your loss, Pede. Dogs are the best, they are connected to god and the universe and they teach us so much. Each one is a blessing.

Every animal I've had has been a blessing, and we love the heck out of them. I had two old guys pass within 8 months of each other a couple years ago, and within a few weeks of each one passing, I needed to give a home to another. Another pet is never a replacement; it's just a new little bit of life at home. My pupper and catbeast are young right now, but I know from the start I'll have to say goodbye to them. It's always worth it. Prayers and 🍺

Border Collie owner here. 15 is way above average. Great dogs.

2
Dallasguy 2 points ago +2 / -0

My border was 17 when I had to let him go. I know the feeling.

Try to smile every time you check the floor before you get out of bed. She would be happy about that. It was her mission.

Just put her next to the bed for the last time. Such a good girl. Thanks.

That love and joy comes with a cost. I miss my two boys every day. I haven't been able to bring myself to get another and it's looking like I never will.

1
CaptainWinston [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thoughts.

It’s rainy today, but she never cared about the weather. We are still going to go to her favorite beach. I will carry her down to the water one last time.

She slept well, checked on her every hour.

Our son is coming to say goodbye and spend a few hours with her, he picked her when he was in 3rd grade, very hard on him too.

We will rescue another dog soon, we need help keeping the evil squirrels and bunnies away from the garden.

Cheers.

Thank you for giving her a home and a family. Also for loving her enough to know when it's the right time to let go. For opening your home and heart again to rescue another best friend.

Dogs have been a huge part of my life since day 1, so I know exactly how you feel. Your sweet girl has had a long life filled with love and adventures and you should feel comfort in knowing that she was happy you were her person every day of her life. Dogs have been our partners through time. They are for us and we are for them.

Dog’s have all the best qualities of people with few if any of the flaws. Loyal to the end, I’ll echo others, while the grief will be there, focus on the life and joy the pet/member of the family gave to you all.

Shelter pets; I always have a soft spot for the misfits.

Oh no. So sorry for your loss. Thank you for rescuing her, and giving her such a great life. Read A Dog’s Purpose or The Art of Racing in the Rain. Makes me feel better to believe our dogs carry their experiences forward to a new life.

My girl just turned 15, rescued her from a bad situation when she was a year old.

They truly make is better and I can't imagine how we deserve them. You took good care of your girl, she sounded like she had the best life ever.

It's so hard to let go, but I'm sure she never loved a day without your unconditional love. Not a bad life.

My condolences, take care pede.
