I just finished a conversation with my boss' boss, telling me (as nice as he can) to make all my facebook posts both future and past as hidden as possible.
When I asked why, he made it clear. People are having their lives ruined by posting a maga hat and he was looking out for my best interests.
I work for a fortune 500 company, multi-national and my position is pretty damned important (only about 10 people are in my position in a huge multi-national company) and my boss' boss is warning me against having my whole life destroyed.
I can't tell if I should be mad, sad, or terrified.
Delete your LinkedIn completely. That shit really uninvented itself. Used to be find a job now it’s find where maga hat man works
Perfection
I guess if you like applying for jobs versus having recruiters reach out.
There might be better things out there that I'm not aware of, but I get 10 to 20 recruiter emails per week through LinkedIn. Most are 3rd party recruiters that I ignore, but I usually get about 1 or 2 internal recruiter emails per week. Since I'm fairly picky, I'd say about an average of 2 per month are potential useful contacts.
Usually what I do is I leave my profile up regardless of whether I'm looking or not and mostly just ignore it when I'm not looking. By ignore it, I usually don't respond to anything, and just click accept on most invites. When I'm back on the job-market:
About 90% of the time, I can turn this into a recruiter-chat, and then a phone-interview. Turning that into an on-site interview usually depends on performance.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's worth pointing out it can be done. It's possible it may be somewhat industry specific (I'm a programmer a.k.a. Software Developer) or I might have been somewhat "lucky" and happened to use the platform in the right ways in order to be far more successful than most.
edit: I've never applied for jobs through LinkedIn, that component might be useless.
Seriously, get off your ass and fucking network. Guarantee you'll find a better job this way.
A former army colonel told me that this world is built on relationships. If one guy has an associate's degree but is chummy with the CEO, and another guy has a master's, 99% of the time the guy chummy with the CEO is chosen.
Wear your MAGA hat and you won't be hired by this asshole company. It has its benefits.
Social media is counterproductive, but in certain sectors keeping a profile on Facebook/LinkedIn is expected or a requirement.
Keep your social media accounts but make them grey rock/zombie. Think of them as placeholders so that no one runs a spoof account of you and uses that as leverage.
That's an interesting point. I get a massive amount of recruiter contacts through LinkedIn and probably wouldn't delete mp profile personally unless I had serious concerns. A few other things you can probably do instead to protect yourself:
