It's silly. It's just a word that basically means the same thing as "black" but of course when used to name-call someone it takes on a lot more negative meaning. Just referring to the word shouldn't necessitate having to not mention it, that's what little kids do. If you call someone that slur (or any other) be prepared for a backlash. But to limit speech when just referring to the word is asinine.
