Make the universities co-sign for student loans.

If they have to pay the bank back for educating someone in a garbage degree that doesn't have any market in the real world, then they'll stop allowing anyone who shows up with the money to get a PhD in gender fluid shift juice studies.

Nah, just stop federally guaranteeing a loan. If you want to learn something that I know, I will happily teach you and take your money. What you do with the knowledge afterward is up to you. If you are willing to pay me to learn everything I know about advanced Settlers of Catan strategy, so be it. It's your money. I shouldn't ever be on the hook for you being dumb enough to think you can make a career out of that.

But the bank that actually loans you the money? They should be very concerned that you will not be able to pay it back. Right now they don't give two shits because if you can't, the government will.

I agree with the thought here. What I'd like to address is the university not giving a shit what people are going to do with their shit diplomas.

Right now a university will give you a masters in gender theory, and if you can't find a job they'll suggest the solution is you need to pay them more for a PhD in gender theory.

If you bought a car that couldn't be used to transport you around, the dealer would have to refund you.

Other than having some alumni success stories to share, the university really doesn't have any obligation to make sure that what they sold you (sometimes for $100K+) actually does what it is suppose to do (provide you with the foundation to successfully enter your desired career field).

I think I would simply disagree that what it is "supposed" to do is what you think it will do.

In my mind an education is nothing more than information in your head, and a degree is nothing more than a piece of paper verifying that said information is in your head and remains there.

What you do with that information is on you, not them. I don't disagree at all that they are shady as shit with trying to convince you to get advanced degrees in the same field, but those are frequently handled not via loans but via grants and aid packages.

Good God this is a fantastic idea. Have the universities financial future depend on the utility of the degree they hand out

Thank ya. As an added benefit if the university graduates someone who just says “fuck it” and doesn’t get a job the university is still on the hook.

Watch admissions all of a sudden start screening potential students for work ethic.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was on this shit in the 1800s: "There is a class of persons to whom by all spiritual affinity i am bought and sold; for them i will go to prison, if need be; but your miscellaneous popular charities; the education at college of fools; the building of meeting-houses to the vain end to which many now stand; alms to sots; and the thousandfold Relief Societies; - though i confess with shame i sometimes succumb and give the dollar, it is a wicked dollar which by and by i shall have the manhood to withhold.
