Hi everyone,
I’m from Greece and, and I’m not sure where this forum stands on the issue, but in any case I’d like to bring it to your attention: Erdogan, Turkey’s president, has announced that the Hagia Sofia will be turned into a mosque.
Symbolically, this is a clear power move, and a gigantic middle finger to Greece. To put it into perspective, it would be like Biden announcing that the Statue of Liberty would be turned into a mosque. Obviously there is a lot of nuance and historical context regarding the situation, but the political motivation is clear. This is a monument with huge historical significance to Greece, and personally I’m saddened and, most of all, scared about the whole situation and what will unfold in the future.
I trust the Greek military should the need arise for defensive action given Erdogan’s intentions, but I’m very pessimistic regarding international support. There are many strategic factors that favor Turkey, and an anti-Greece narrative is set in motion by the UN and European media.
For what it’s worth, I believe you Americans are lucky to have President Trump. I’m not sure he’ll be on our side regarding the situation, but I’m hoping he will be. Based on what I’ve seen, he’s morally on the right side of things.
Take care, pedes.
This is just the beginning unfortunately. America has no need for the old world and with European attitudes towards America at a historic negative, there's not much incentive to help for the sake of helping. Nearly every European country since the fifteenth century has colonized and fought one another over those colonies and resources within those colonies. These fights bled into one another and eventually culminated in the first two world wars.
When America exited both of those wars not only at its pinnacle, but with almost every other country ripe for the taking, did we go and colonize them? No, we put our military at the service of the global commons we instituted free trade and we made sure everyone played nice. All we asked in return was a bulwark against communism and that if something unsavory had to happen for American good most would look the other way. Was it perfect? No but for 70 years the American system ensured a global system that pulled millions out of poverty and defeated the soviets.
So in 2001 when our staunchest allies shafted us following the worst attack on American soil in history, we sort of wanted out of that global order. Unfortunately Americans relied on the global system for one essential resource- energy. So after undermining American interests and taking all of this for granted, when energy independence reared its ugly head Americans jumped at that and we've been pulling out of the global system since then. Trump and covid only accelerate this more and certain countries are in a prime position to take advantage of the power vacuum.
Turkey is one of those countries and the American exit doesn't badly effect them. They'll probably attempt some kind of neo ottoman territorial acquisitions. A betting man would see greece and the rest of the Balkans cozy up to Russia. But who knows, we'll be turning Mexico into our China within these next few years.
