Unless things have changed a great deal since I was in college -- the top students went to medical, law, pharmacy, veterinary schools -- or headed to wall street or other lucrative business professions.
Those that hovered around passing grades went into teaching because they knew they couldn't make it in the dog eat dog competitive atmosphere which characterized any of the post graduate programs.
So if you're wondering why the education system fell to the commies -- that's the real reason. The average students were easier to rope-a-dope into all this socialism claptrap. The brighter minds were pursuing the American dream determined to get their piece of the pie.
The way to reverse the trend of commies in the universities is to get rid of the "education degree" as a requirement for teaching. There are many retired docs, lawyers, pharmacists, vets, and business leaders who have professional competency to teach and if given the opportunity to assist in uprooting the communist stranglehold on education would probably be more than willing to teach a few classes.
Given that these people were the cream of the crop as students -- there would probably be a corresponding rise in student performance if they taught classes. A student can only learn as much as the teacher knows (assuming the student doesn't supplement himself from other sources.)
A plan such as this certainly couldn't make things worse than they are now and might straighten the mess out altogether.
Old saying from the 70's:
Those who can; do. Those who can't; teach.

Yep. I’m a chemist, can confirm. All the people who barely scraped by in college are science teachers now.
I tutor on the side and I know more about what they’re “teaching” than they do, even after 5 years. 🙄
