The darker the skin, the less vitamin D a person gets from the sun. Vitamin D affects the immune system, if you don't get enough vitamin D, your body has a harder time fighting infections.
People living near the equator get a lot more sun then those near the polls, over a long period of time, people developed darker skin to protect themselves as too much sun is also bad.
The fix is simply to take vitamin D supplement or eat/drink more things with vitamin D.
If everyone got the same amount of vitamin D, the race of the person would not matter.

That's one theory. But it's also pretty reasonable to assume that respiratory infections are less common in the hot and dry plains of Africa in comparison to the cold and wet climates of Europe, and people adapted to deal with different evolutionary pressures. I mean, if you're lungs can't deal with a cold, you won't live very long in a place like Norway.
Vitamin D is probably a big part of it, at least for this virus, though. And also, despite the phrasing used in the media, don't be mislead, both domestically and globally, old white men have died in much larger numbers than any other group. It's only affected certain minorities in the US at a higher rate than the overall population, because whites are a minority among urban (city) populations already. Whites are only 44% of American cities, and respiratory infections spread easier in densely populated urban areas. The media is including rural whites in the total number to try claiming that non-whites are being victimized at a far greater rate.
Mariox is right about Vitamin D, but so many 'helpers' for not getting sick/having milder symptoms (like taking vitamins, eating veggies, daily exercise, drinking plenty of non-sugar fluids, relaxing without drugs) are education/lifestyle related.
People of all races suffer this lack of education/self-care, equally.
both.
obesity + diabetes + hypertension is MUCH MORE PREVALENT in hispanic and black populations.
and it's both culture and genetics. deep fried everything. shit food, genetic predisposition to obesity, inability to defer gratification (education leading to better careers, choosing healthy foods & exercise, general lifestyle, etc.)
OF COURSE they are dying at a greater rate. They're sicker.
Mariox makes a good point. Some other possibilities: living in a big city (higher population density = more disease), or poor hygeine in general, or poverty (I needz dem muneez so I cant stays home). Yes, that last one is politically correct, and I resent having to type it, but it's true. Poor people are less likely to stay home from work.

Could be either. Or both.
