Happy Sunday Gunday, pedes! I, like many others, have been wanting to buy a gun for quite some time but always pushed it back because I felt safe enough that I didn't need it. That has recently changed and I would love some recommendations from you all on what a good first gun would be to protect a household. I've been leaning towards a Mossberg 88, but let me know what you all think.

As a former Gun Shop manager that prides himself on dispensing good advice based on 45 years of shooting experience, and not Fuddlore, For home defense I always recommend a quality pistol caliber carbine or braced pistol for newbies.

Low recoil, low muzzle blast and flash, and far easier to hit with than a pistol. Also easier to mount a light and optical sight. Something reliable like a Sriborg SP9A1 in 9mm with a quality defensive round like Federal HST or Hornady Critical Defense would be my recommendation.

Let me guess, the sound of racking a pump will scare off the bad guys as well? Exactly the kind of Fudd crap I work hard to dispel. Do you know how wide the pattern of OO buck is across a room? At 10 yards? 25?

You need to aim a shotgun, they have heavy recoil, are tougher and slower to reload under pressure, are slow for follow up shots, clumsy to maneuver in close quarters, and buckshot overpenetrates. They can be used as an effective home defense weapon, but are far from ideal, and require extra training.

Better learn a little more. That Chinese Eotech knockoff shows the extent of your "knowledge."

Right-a $800 gun over a maybe $200-250 gun for their first one. Get the shotgun, and then a handgun. Practice. There is no substitution for practice.

Striborgs are about $650 retail.
