I think there is a good chance there is a connection, but if the defector actually knows a link not so sure.

Regardless, though, they do have information on China's involvement with the virus, and how they tried multiple times to suppress the information in any way they could.

EDIT: A thought just occurred to me is that our attention is being focused away from a huge mine. G. Maxwell is in prison, this coming out and so much other things as well, and the attention is slightly off her already. I think there is a gearing up for a hit, but this is way, way out there and most likely wrong. Just a thought thouigh.
