Both military and non-military means were used. Finland was attacked by the Red army. Other countries, where logistics were more difficult, Bolsheviks sent armies of agents of influence, including to the USA.
A lot of the Marxism and communism propaganda in the USA is the direct consequence of Bolsheviks/Soviets/Russians trying to meddle in the political process. Russian financed Marxist propoganda stopped in 1990's, however people who were on the payroll continue to do their job.
I have a hard time imagining an example of more difficult military logistics than invading the Karelian Peninsula (that's the area around the Finnish/Russian border).
The Russian invasion failed precisely because the logistics were so awful -- Russian units packed onto the very few, very poor roads and were ambushed continually by Finns hidden in the forests.
