I was considering make a post about it here, rather than just on communities.win (all changes are posted there, while the important few are reposted here), but this is a good substitute.

A post linked here earlier today made a good point when speaking about the downfall of that other social media site:

We now have an entirely new way to view upvote/downvote scores. A user on Reddit used to be able to see their score. But now, everything is fuzzed. For example, if you made a semi-controversial comment before, but many people agreed, you may have a score like (47/45), leaving you with a -2 next to the comment. Now you just get a -2 and nobody knows if anyone agreed with you.

And for that reason, I made this change.

10

True Democracy is not DIRECT democracy.

True Democracy means every vote is recorded, not obfuscated by Reddit style nonsense. True Democracy also doesn't involve mail in ballots.

1
deleted 1 point ago +1 / -0
1
BoughtByBloomberg2 1 point ago +1 / -0

But we're a sort of Democracy. Representative Democracy to be specific.

Pedes in California have their local demands met cause they elect based sheriffs and councilmen. State no, Federally yes. That's the flaws within a Representative Democracy. First past the post is basically the only way to go because each space has it's own candidates.

I would personally like to move to a proportional Democracy rather than first past the post. It would motivate more conservatives to vote in blue states as their votes would still count towards the state's distribution of senators, house members and electors.

This proportionality would also allow a third party to rise more easily. So we could actually launch that .Win party or the Lion party or the Trump party and get into office based on the vote share distribution system.

It would essentially work like this. Each party hands in a list of candidates for the election. The amount of votes they get divided by the total amount of votes gives back a percentage. This percentage is the seats they can fill with their own officials. So 15% of the vote = 15% of the 80 or 40 seats. 12 and 6 respectively.

Now the flaws in this system are obvious. This is a party system and will require compromise. The parties are now what is used to represent people and no longer with the districts, which could still function for local elections.

The best solution I have yet to ever encounter was to simple repeal all this universal suffrage nonsense and make it so only net-taxpayers vote.

A representative Republic is.... a Representative Democracy.

What do you do to elect the representative? You vote right?

A democracy, not a DIRECT democracy, is nothing but a style of governance where the people vote to choose their government.

Same way that a Republic is not a free state, but just a nation that is not headed by a monarch but an elected official. What you're saying is we are a Republic that elects it's representatives with a vote by the people.

A Representative Democracy.

What the US is is a FEDERATED Republic governed by a Representative Democracy.

I think the future should demand that every vote and voter be recorded together. Not only do they know who voted, they know who voted for whom. That way there's some accountability when it comes to who voted for deceitful destructive politicians and policies and who tried to turn shit around consistently but was always out-voted or... whatever.

I think fraud would be a lot harder. I don't give a fuck about the 'Privacy' factor anymore. I can point to 100 people right now and tell you who they're voting for without speaking to them for a minute and my +- margin of error would be better than a Rasmussen.

4
BoughtByBloomberg2 4 points ago +6 / -2

I don't agree with that because then we'd have witch hunts of cancel culture in the voting booths. The secret ballot is an integral part of the election system because it allowed many pedes here to be stealth liberals.

"Of course I believe in welfare for illegals!"

Meanwhile inside their head.

"Holy fuck these people are insane better vote for Trump!"

Instead you should be mailed a NAMED AND PERSONAL voting certificate each year and have to hand the certificate to the election official with your ID. One certificate = One vote.

Certs = Vote = No problem. Certs < Votes = Some dead people have been voting Democrat again! Certs > Votes = Some election official fucked up with the ballots again.

2
RiverFenix 2 points ago +3 / -1

I'm sure this convo we're having has been had soooooooo many times..

Aliens would be like "look, these retards on a random internet forum discovered the most common sense, fool-proof, fraud-proof election system known to man, for the 10,000th recorded time since 1992 and the people they elect can't/won't/don't/refuse to even consider any of these points"

0
BoughtByBloomberg2 0 points ago +2 / -2

It's really beyond just incompetence. It's self serving malice. Can't get elected to fix a problem if the problem is fixed.

I would genuinely support something like a blood oath for politicians. Where they can take as many vows to solve an issue as they want, but if they fail to fix it. That's it. You're getting the long drop. Also you can only campaign on oaths taken just to make it extra hilarious.

"Vote for me!"

"What will you do for us?"

"A lot of things I am not going to specify!"

Unlikely to happen, I think that'd dissuade people from participating. It's just generally too fundamental of a change... although I like the idea on the surface.

What we could do is give some non-identifying stats such as average account age, average karma, etc - then it'd at least be possible to spot posts that were upvoted or downvoted by a bunch of inactive bot accounts?

4
thegeebeebee 4 points ago +7 / -3

On slashdot, one only receives a limited number of voting points to give. I think that's a bit draconian.

But we could have a stat to see how many up or down votes we've issued.

A real spoil sport would have more down votes than up.

4
Isolated_Patriot 4 points ago +8 / -4

I've always liked the idea of needing to "spend" your useless internet points to vote. New accounts would have to actually participate in the site to be able to vote (or gain something like a few points a day), and users who participate a lot would rarely, if ever, run out of points.

This would be a VERY fundamental change, however, and I'm sure there would be too many drawbacks to such a system.

EDIT: feel free to continue down-voting a mere opinion when I already said it wouldn't work.

7
deleted 7 points ago +9 / -2
0
Isolated_Patriot 0 points ago +2 / -2

Like I said, there would be many drawbacks. You couldn't just switch to such a system, a whole new one would have to be built from the ground up around it. An alternative method would have every account with a 'budget' that increases the more you upvote and decreases the more you downvote. That would make bot accounts that downvote everything on the site a lot harder to implement, but a modicum of participation would leave you free to downvote, as long as you were contributing positive input at a higher rate.

I'm just spit-balling about social media sites in general, not actually making suggestions for this site.

-1
deleted -1 points ago +1 / -2

Racerspuff -1 points ago +1 / -2

I like that although I'm not sure it needs to go to a mod queue for review. What if your name, after the pts for the current post, to have in parenthesis the overall +/- on like the past 2 days. So if someone had upvoted 20 posts and downvoted 10 they'd have a +10. By keeping it a short window of time (I just pulled 2 days out of my ass) it would prevent things from getting too crazy on the numbers displayed. Actually maybe not even a time window, a vote window, so like the last 20 upvotes or downvotes showed, that way nobody would ever be outside the -20 to +20 range.

1
thegeebeebee 1 point ago +2 / -1

Ooooo like a gold-backed currency vs fiat!

0
Isolated_Patriot 0 points ago +1 / -1

Exactly. I think there is something there, it just needs something more to make it work right. A 'reddit-like' site would have to be built around such a system from the ground up, too. It couldn't just be switched on a whim.

4
ProdigalPlaneswalker 4 points ago +6 / -2

Disclosure: I'll downvote a good, but merely entertaining, comment to push a greater, factually relevant, comment to the top. I might be less inclined to do this if the votes weren't anonymous.

Isolated_Patriot 18 points ago +19 / -1

It is a very ineffective way to create an echo chamber. Without being able to see the downvotes, you can't tell how many people disagree with the narrative. Discuss practically admitted as much when they removed the downvoting ability a couple years ago.

Facebook also used a very similar line of reasoning when they refused to add a thumbs down option for so long. The angry face addition is just ambiguous enough you can't always tell if someone is disagreeing with the poster, or the content, or the thing the poster themselves were upset about. So it gets cognitive dissonanced into whichever way you want it to be.

3
RiverFenix 3 points ago +4 / -1

The left generally wants to convince you there is no alternate/flip side to anything.

Hence 'It's Okay to be White' gets the reaction it does from them. They can't fathom the concept of hypocrisy, it's Black and White and if they're right you must be wrong.

The thumbs up gesture was popularized by the head of the Roman Empire, wildly notorious for colonizing much of Europe and pitting minorities against each other in meleecombat..... This symbol was used to ensure gladiators would be relieved from their duties. More on how this widely spread Nazi dogwhistle is problematic later on, but coming up next on CNN, is Kanye's presidential run a form of African American collusion?!?!? So I already came to this thread when I first saw it an hour ago, upvoted and watched with delight as the wall got 10 feet higher, then went on my merry way.

I just now had to come back, a mere hour after first using the new feature, and tell you how much I enjoy the improvement.

I had forgotten how great it was to have this!

IMO, the change adds nuance and context to a format that is sorely in need of it.

In short, you crushed it again u/Doggos et al.

This goes a long way in showing transparency as well. It is kind of a canary feature, IMO.

If ten years from now, when you are all billionaires from your worldwide fame and someone else is running TD.win, while you all sit in your mansions in hot tubs of champagne getting your toes licked by your soulmates, and they try to take this feature away.

We'll know fuckery is afoot.

This motivates me to upvote comments that have been downvoted. I like that.

Fantastic!

Getting rid of that feature was one of the worst changes reddit ever made.

I never realized that site ever had this feature, just thought it was annoying that they didnt.

I am optimistically speculating that the onsey-twosey downvotes are often caused unintentionally. Several times I have fat-fingered the downvote button when trying to minimize top comments while scrolling through a thread. Maybe not though...

We can now see them brigading, it is magnificent!

Now we can see just how many of these trolls are in a comment section based on the downvotes. What an awesome feature to bring back, especially since the only ones opposed are the Blue spies.
