We called it forecaddying at the club I caddied at. We had to sprint ahead to watch the foursome's tee-shots then obtain yardage for them before they arrived. Then they'd hit their approach, we'd clean the clubs, fix the divots, etc.
What makes this a great picture is that there are tons of members at clubs that never let caddies ride on the back of their carts. Ever. Even if lightning is rolling in and you need to get to shelter.
The best forecaddie loops were with members that would always tell you to hop on so you weren't running to the green every hole or the ones that would occasionally want to walk so they'd let you drive their cart ahead to spot for them.
Caddying is a great educational experience for any lurking parental pedes. The summers I spent caddying in High School and during my college years was basically like obtaining a 4 year communications degree. Not only that but I was developing a book of contacts that I still have today. The cash isn't bad either if you're good at it. It helped pay for the bulk of my education.
100% Agree. We "forecaddied" on about 6-7 holes... When I caddied I made $60-80 per double in the early 90's. Made more for tourneys. One thing it did teach me is the contact game. I was fresh out of the Navy, in school and collecting my GI Bill. Times were good. I would meet the "Caddy Master" down at the local pub and make sure I bought him a few beers and let him win at darts and pool. I was always assigned best golfers... more $$$.
Some of the golfers I have caddied for: (Pitt Area)
Myron Cope Pittsburgh Sportscaster and inventor of the Terrible Towel.
Mario Lemeuix
Mel Blount & Jack Ham (70's Steelers)
Tom Barasso
