A friend of mine who grew up in Gettysburg, PA told me about New York from his perspective.

When he was a kid, it had been a real shithole. He and his family would go every few years, and they would come up from Penn Station and make a quick dodge from there to wherever they were going. Subways with graffiti, bums in the stairwells, you know the image.

When he and his buddies became adults, they decided to go on their own. This was after Giuliani had been mayor for a few years. They came up from Penn Station and were convinced that they had gotten off at the wrong stop. Everything had changed so drastically for the better that it took them a long time to accept that this was the place they knew.

My experience has been the opposite. The first time I saw New York was the early 2010s. Every time I have been back, it has gotten just a little shittier.

Yeah, same here. I'd always heard how shitty and unsafe NYC was back in the day. It was relatively fine when I was there, but going back now it feels like it's turning back into the city portrayed in Death Wish.
