There is no doubt that what is going on right now is an epic battle between good and evil. This is not a battle we can afford to lose.

Yes it is.

But, beware of the temptation to listen to our will (for me, it is Trump re-elected, avoid devastation of America and our families) verses His Will.

His shield of faith will protect us. Repeat.

I prayed so hard for Obama to lose in 2012 and for Romney to be president even though I have hesitation about a Mormon president.

Yet God in His infinite wisdom allowed the evil of the Obama administration to be extended for four more years.

I think that’s part of why Donald Trump was elected in 2016, so indeed Romans 8:28.

“And we know all things work together for good for them that love God and those who are the called according to his purpose!!”

billiejoebandit 34 points ago +34 / -0

This battle is not one we can win by ourselves. Pray, love your neighbors, be kind to others, and show others God’s love through your actions and interactions with them. Reliance on self and ignoring God’s will is what has us in this place. This is not new. Go read Daniel 9. That and other passages show what happens when a people turn their back on God.

The ones that are not brainwashed and are intentionally exploiting the system are evil.

Yes, God wins in the end but that does not mean we will not have major losses along the way. We must pray for our Nation to wake up and unite as one against the evil that has taken hold of our world.

MagicBeans 3 points ago +3 / -0

This is a very important point. Teachings tell us that even though the next life should be our True desire, we have work and honor to give in this life until we are called, and should always keep pushing ahead with our cause and not looking back.

I'm new to reading the Bible. What's your opinion on KJV vs GNT?

10
sir_rockness 10 points ago +10 / -0

Some translations are more literal and some are more interpretive. This in s nutshell means they are closer to translating the original text literally. The problem with a literal translation is if you dont understand historical context meaning can be misconstrued. The problem with an interpretive translations are that historical context can be forgotten.

Personally here is how I roll

  • Youngs Literal - my literal trans
  • NLT - my daily reader
  • the message - my paraphrase

If anything is in doubt I keep a strongs greek/Hebrew concordance and I have a kjv with strongs numbers... I can lookup the strings number, then I can search the entire bible for where that word is used, that gives me context

This sounds like magic to the uninitiated but it's super simple with the MySword Bible app on my android

It's this kinda study that will show you just how many things are misconstrued in the bible. Simple things like servanthood (Deacon/Diakonos - means servant) being transliterated in english bibles instead of translated and becoming some kind of titled, quasi-governmental role in the Church.

Church is another misconstrued word in the bible. It was never used to reference a building yet we must fight against the translation of ekklesia (Greek for those who are called out, the assembly of Christisns) to Kirk (Scottish word for a place of worship) every single day.

3
FightGoodFight 3 points ago +3 / -0

Thank you!

7
sir_rockness 7 points ago +7 / -0

No prob. I grew up in a really legalistic Church and I went through a process of untangling my beliefs and textually criticizing them.

This led me to visit and find other groups that were less legalistic and dogmatic. I did the same thing a year ago when the leaders of my fellowship began mixing god's teachings with globalist messages...

It's a lifetime pursuit. God gives us what we need when we need it if we ask.

I hope everyone on this board chooses to make Jesus Christ the focal point of their life. Can you imagine how powerful we'd be in him?

7
MagicBeans 7 points ago +7 / -0

I am fairly new to reading the Bible as well. What got me hooked, inexplicably, is watching a show called Gospel of John on Netflix. It’s a reading and portrayal of the Book of John. I was completely captivated and I was overwhelmed by a sense of truth in what I was hearing/seeing. I was raised catholic, was an altar boy as a kid, etc, so I knew a bit about the Bible, but never actually studied it. I also use a couple of apps including You Version that help build reading plans. It’s helped to get my legs under me for sure and made me want more of how the Word transforms, which is the point.

5
Furaffinitydotnet 5 points ago +5 / -0

The history of the KJV translation is unique.

It also has a distinctions on the role and nature of lucifer.

However, there are fake retranslated KJVs so you want to read the original.

2
MagicBeans 2 points ago +2 / -0

I appreciate the guidance!

4
Polyobfuscation 4 points ago +4 / -0

KJV is a great translation, but KJV onlyism is a cult that tends to push the idea that the translation is even more inspired than the original Hebrew and Greek from which it was translated. If you’re new to the Bible, you should go through the videos at the Bible Project. There’s a lot going on in the Bible that is not intuitive for the modern reader, so tools like the Bible Project are invaluable for the newcomer.

5
RealRedneck 5 points ago +5 / -0

No joke. I was on a mission trip in Kenya, and the Baptist in the group wanted to know if the Swahili translation we were using was KJV. Umm. It's Swahili.

1
Polyobfuscation 1 point ago +1 / -0

Par for the course for a lot of KJV only Baptists. I’ve seen/heard a lot of crazy irrational things coming from that group (a lot of them in my own family, so I have a high degree of familiarity) A lot of them tend to also take the translation so seriously they believe in a flat Earth and literal windows to heaven that let rain in. Totally misses the point of the Gospel and the Great Commission.

2
AlphaNathan 2 points ago +3 / -1

Not OP, but you will never hear me say you shouldn't read any bible of God.

That said, KJV is, from what I understand, based on "older" texts, whereas other versions tend to be based on "more" texts.

My church teaches from KJV only, but we have several members that have other versions, and our pastor will even reference other versions at times.

I would really, really recommend a good baptist church, my friend! Going to church is much more important than the version of the bible you choose to read, IMO.

7
MuadDon 7 points ago +7 / -0

I would really, really recommend a good baptist church, my friend! Going to church is much more important than the version of the bible you choose to read, IMO.

IMO people need to be vetting their place of worship hard, perhaps like never before. A growing number of incompetents and/or wokesters are at the helm of a disturbing amount of congregations, leading them astray. It's never been more important than now to personally read and understand your bible.

4
RealRedneck 4 points ago +5 / -1

THIS! Find a place that actually teaches the Bible and not topical studies. Topical studies are great for lovey feely stuff, but you need meat and potatoes too. Get a good concordance for in-depth study in the original languages.

Someone I went back and forth with on a post a few days ago turned me onto Jordan Peterson’s three part series on Biblical principles on Youtube. He really explains the amazing origins and interweaving of the Bible and it’s importance to society’s fabric. I am about to start the 3rd series tonight. I knew who JP was, but never listened to him before. Totally worth a listen from so many different aspects. Also interesting to read the comments from these lectures on Youtube. He has turned countless atheists around with his intellectual approach.

You're easy to analyze. I've met hundreds just like you.

You're an angry person.

That's why you love the fire and brimstone parts of The Bible. You're more concerned with punishing people than forgiving them. I know people like you. You're miserable in life and you want others to be miserable also,. You're a stressed out individual always looking to pop off and argue because ultimately, you are insecure. That's why you love the fire and brimstone. Makes you feel better.

11
Magistra 11 points ago +11 / -0

Maybe he is young. Once you get the Taste, you will yearn for more and develop buds for the OT.

3
PhilipeNegro 3 points ago +3 / -0

I'm definitely not young, but I do find it to be more of a history of the ancient world - especially when studied alongside contemporaneous accounts from neighboring peoples. It does create the context of the NT, yes, but it lacks some of the grittier details of what was really going on in the region at the time. Are our modern versions are based on the Leningrad codex - compiled by atheist Communists to pull the balls off the Orthodox Church? I can't really say.

The one thing many fans of the OT tend to avoid when teaching it is the prevalence of human sacrifice in Canaan. The context of the Israelite rebellions against the Romans is another. I even blew my Catholic mother-in-law's mind with the story of Judah & Tamar (not shocking, I know).

Whether this is to focus on the more iconic stories or to not demonize certain ethnic groups, I don't know. However, the war, chaos, idolatry, deceit, and decadence that forms the book is the thing that does - to another's point ITT - set the stage for the NT and God's new covenant, which I feel is the real point of all this.

2
eagleeyeddjt 2 points ago +2 / -0

Catholic pede here. I'm intrigued by your Judah and Tamar comment. Care to elaborate?

2
PhilipeNegro 2 points ago +2 / -0

Only that this was a woman who worked in the church and admitted that many of the stories, including J&T she was wholly unfamiliar with outside of the names in the OT - they just didn't teach it in school or CCD.

Growing up, the church seemed more concerned with obedience to their system, with all of its idiosyncrasies. Nothing really against it, but I ended up after 40 years gravitating to Orthodoxy - it seemed interested in history and scriptural interpretation, not so much the bureaucracy of the catechism. The church brothers enjoy my questions, and are actually happy when I want to peel the onion, so to speak. I needed something that the Catholic system wasn't providing me - all priests are different, I know, but I just wasn't finding anyone to entertain my interest in stories and history.

I still attend Catholic mass with my family during holidays and have great respect for it as a sister institution in service to God, yet my heart seems to have found a place in the Orthodox Church.

2
RealRedneck 2 points ago +2 / -0

What in the OT concealed is in the NT revealed.

-5
PhilipeNegro -5 points ago +2 / -7

The OT is more of a collection of historical anecdotes, laying out the timeline of various ancient peoples - it doesn't really deal with the spirit, or a method for man's salvation. For true inspiration, we turn to God's new covenant with mankind, the promise of salvation through his Son, Jesus Christ. That's the point of the whole thing.

8
lispboy 8 points ago +8 / -0

Woah dude, I can't tell you on how many levels you're wrong here. The OT is all about the Spirit of God, even goes deep into unclean and familiar spirits. Every time Jesus opened his mouth to speak, he always goes back to the OT.

Just a few examples:

  • Gen 1:2 - And the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the deep.
  • Gen 6:3 - Adonai said, “My Spirit will not live in human beings forever, for they too are flesh; therefore their life span is to be 120 years.”
  • Sodom and Gomorrah, a city infested with unclean spirits, destroyed and burned to the ground because of it.
  • Pharaoh says about Joseph, "The Spirit of God lives in him"
  • The Exodus had the Spirit of God lead the children of Israel in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night after their escape from Egypt!
  • God filled Bezaleel with the Spirit of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding and instructed Moses to have him build the Tabernacle, God's spiritual dwelling place in the physical world.
  • In Leviticus God tells us "Do not turn to spirit-mediums or sorcerers, don't seek them out, to be defiled by them..."
  • Num 11 - God takes some of the Spirit he gave to Moses and put it on the 70 leaders and they prophesied right then and there, but not afterwards.
  • Samuel, the first major prophet was so full of the Spirit of God he had the authority to anoint kings!
  • Judges and Kings - Either the Spirit of God or an unclean spirit fell upon every judge and king in both books.
  • The book of Job is mostly about spiritual warfare

And that's just off the top of my head from the first half of the OT. I can go on but you get the gist.

3
eagleeyeddjt 3 points ago +3 / -0

My man. This is my morning assignment -- to read these passages.

5
deleted 5 points ago +5 / -0
3
eagleeyeddjt 3 points ago +3 / -0

Not to mention all of the times that Jesus is foreshadowed in Isaiah and Daniel. Powerful stuff. Indeed, the Bible is the world's first hyperlinked book. If you footnote all of the OT passages in the NT you'd probably never finish with the task. You'd grow spiritually, though, that much is for certain.

3
GuerillaYourDreams 3 points ago +3 / -0

Actually that’s not true, and the Old Testament is extremely important in its messianic prophecies: try reading some of Isaiah.

3
eagleeyeddjt 3 points ago +3 / -0

Agree to disagree. While Jesus does bring salvation, there is much to be learned from the Old Testament. Even Jesus himself says:"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." If he's coming to fulfill them, they must be pretty important.

2
sir_rockness 2 points ago +2 / -0

Both are the word of God, pede. Jesus was a jew and the Jews are God's chosen people. Don't forget that

3
PhilipeNegro 3 points ago +3 / -0

So why does Paul refer to himself in Romans 11 as an Israelite, and not a Jew? Did Judaism proper exist before the Talmud was collected and codified? There's a great deal of history that says the various tribes had differing views on the tradition, that even exists today - look up how many times somebody tries to sacrifice an sheep or goat during Passover, even though it's looked at as antiquated and barbaric by most modern Jews.

So to your statement: Jesus, by the modern interpretation, was a "Jew" - I simply ask, with all this history at hand, what kind? Or were the Israelites not completely collected in an organized tradition yet?

A lot of Churches and Church leaders are aligning with the globalist agenda at this time.

By their fruit you'll know them. If they preach compliance, worry, fear in the name of Christ they are not with us.

A lot of Christians are saying there is no way DJT can be appointed by God because of his tweets and his past... theyve obviously not read the story of Israel, king David, Noah, Joseph, etc.

I'm not saying we should verbally and physically attack those who are misled. I'm simply saying judge by their fruits... there is no fear, worry or guilt in Christ.

Good to see the Bible getting so many upTrumps

Some Bible tips for new believers or the curious: You can read through the whole Bible in about 72 hours, but 72 hours for the entire book is a really ambitious pace, I'd recommend spreading it over a year at about 30 minutes a day, then taking time to think, process and pray through the deep truths it contains. The book is divided into new and old testaments, Old covers Creation to the end of Israel (prior to its re-establishment in 1948 of course), there is a 400 year silence that lines up with the time of Alexander the great, then the New Testament begins with the arrival of Jesus Christ and ends towards the end of John's life (one of Jesus' followers).

The Old Testament is about 2.5 times the reading length of the New and is a bit trickier to grasp because of the specifics of the Jewish nation, but it is essential reading. If this is your first trip through the Bible I'd recommend a New Testament sandwich, start with the new, then go through the old, then read the new one more time and things will make much more sense.

If you really give the Bible a chance it resonates like no other book. The setup/fall/redemption arc that plays over and over again in the Old testament until the climax in Jesus' resurrection has echoes all over our culture, most songs stories and movies follow a similar 3 act structure pattern. No other book deals in prophecy that actually comes true, no other book speaks to the heart and the human condition like the Bible, and nobody but the Jesus of the Bible can save our souls, bring contentment to our lives and open heaven to us when we die. I'm of the opinion that a mass rediscovery of our Faith is essential for turning America back towards greatness. Give the Bible a thorough reading, you wont regret it.
