Can this only happen in certain states or something? My voter registration is good, but I don't recall ever having to select any party, and it doesn't say.

I've never voted before, so unsure.

Seems like I should just be able to vote for...whoever the fuck I want...

Some states are 'closed primaries' meaning that you have to register as a specific party in order to vote for that party. In the general election it doesn't matter which party you're registered in. You can vote for whichever person you want.

It's a party primary vote for party members only, sometimes independents.
