I think you are correct. There are already screenshots of the twitter tools they use to "black listing" trends and users:
It came out on the news just a few hours ago. And as you said, it is exposing once again their obvious bias and censorship.

This could be maybe the real goal of the hackers, looks a lot like a show of power.
