The concern about government over-reach and the concern about the threat of COVID are not mutually exclusive. You can have both. My feeling now is that if we're missing either one, there's a problem.
Government should not force anyone to wear a mask, but its still a very good idea to wear one. And it would be much appreciated by everyone in your local town.
