You are wrong, although there are many good ones, there are almost as many bad ones, most just hide it very well. Stephenson descendant here. Grandfather worked the rail his whole life. He sacrificed so I could enjoy the life I lead today. I will never forget that man.
Story: My grandmother gets woken up by the phone asking my grandfather to work overtime at 2am in the morning. Having 5 children, this man did not turn down overtime.
Now, my grandmother, his wife of probably 30 years at this point, asks if she can come with him just to see what he does and what's going on when he's called to work at 2am.

One thing that helps me in these situations is to flip the script, ask yourself if your grandson acts like an ass when he is 16-17 years old and doesn't fully appreciate you and everything you have to offer him, would you hold that against him? Or would you know it was due to youth, is a completely normal phase of development, and forgive him almost immediately?

RJCR 1940, an EMD FP7A freight/passenger unit, built 1950 for the CNO&TP, later sold to the Southern Railway, then to RJ Corman Railroad Group. EMD F-units are in my opinion the most beautiful diesels ever to grace the rails.

Hooray for Trains! I was at a Train Museum in Pennsylvania, and it had a comprehensive history of the railways of the US. There's a valuable lesson in there.
Because it's a long, repetitive history of the Government overregulating and fucking around with the Railways, to "promote fairness," that ALWAYS resulted in mass failure, bankruptcy, exorbitant ticket prices, and frankly the paralysis of a Mass transit infrastructure that could RIGHT NOW be making travel from town to town, state to state, faster and cheaper than we could believe. Imagine if Truckers, instead of driving multiple states in a straight shot, just did multiple short deliveries a day, never needing to leave their families for long periods of time, not needing to sleep in their cabs, because you'd just pick up a trailer at the local freight train depot and get hauling, drop it off, and go grab a new one for your next shot.

The American rail network was once a marvel of efficiency, the envy of the civilized world. But successive meddling governments have reduced it to a pathetic shadow of its former stature, plagued by bankruptcies and abandonments. It's a national tragedy, and the masses barely even know about it.
I never knew it, but I have a soft spot for trains. Didn't even realize it until I realized that I own every single iteration of the board game "Ticket to Ride." Which currently has like 12 different boxed sets. Wait, 15? A total of 22 maps? And a card game? I don't know. But I grew up riding the Long Island Rail Road, and only now having moved away do I understand the lack of railways elsewhere.
And the LIRR sucked. But at least it was built and available, and... relatively functional.
It didn't always suck. By the time you were riding on it, it was pretty well bankrupt. There were those who believed that the government was deliberately driving it to shit so no one would complain when it went away. I don't know if it was a conspiracy theory or not, but it sure describes the elites' attitude toward the railroads.

The train is one of the ultimate symbols of "Delayed Gratification", which is one of the main reasons Western Society is so technologically wealthy with a high standard of living.
It takes an incredible amount of work upfront to make a rail system. From the surveying and grading of soil, to the mining of iron, copper, and other metals, the smelting and forging of parts for the engines, cars, and rails, and the installation of all the track. But once it is installed and running it takes minimal maintenance and energy to use going forward. Its an ultimate symbol of "investing in the future"
