Whenever I’ve been curious, I ask people what their heritage is. Usually gets people talking about family history and what countries their ancestors were from. Have had some great conversations with people about what caused their families to immigrate here at whatever point in time. As far as I know, has not caused offense. Can be asked to anyone since my own ancestors immigrated here from Scotland/England mostly.
Yeah it's weird. I'm not going to be offended if you just ask me what race I am. I think too many people complained about micro-aggressions and now people are afraid to talk in general.
Sorry, should have clarified. I only have done this when people are speaking in heavily accented English. Lived in Los Angeles for a while so was never sure if someone was a tourist or American
Fun story- I get this a lot when people realize I'm not all white.
idiot: What's your nationality?(bc in liberal doublespeak you can't ask someone what race or ethnicity they are)
Me: American.
Idiot: Ok, but where are your parents from?
Me: Virginia and North Carolina.
Idiot: Oh but what are their nationalities?
Me: American. Oh you want to know what my ethnicity is? White, Black, Native American.
Idiot: Oh, so you're not really American! You're African-American!
Me: -__-
And if I disagree or counter the inane bullshit- I magically become white instead.
