My point was that they overlook the much larger crime (attempting to murder a LEO) and simply pass it off that his only crime was minor property damage to a door.

There is a line which divides peaceful protesters from criminals... if you are actively destroying property and seeking to harm/ intimidate others or deprive others of their rights- you are no longer just protesting.
