Maybe it depends on where you lived because the programming is largely locally determined (or used to be anyway, not sure about now). Where I grew up I actually listened to them a lot because it was nearly all just classical music.
They lull you with a gentle voice and then spew the . . ."dedicated to a more peaceful, just and verdant world." It's this soft, relentless propaganda that I pay for.
Originally it was to give us "quality" television and shocking as this might seem today, for a while they did. Sesame Street programming really helped children before they reached school age. They learned numbers, counting, the alphabet and even a little reading.
I did babysitting from 11 or so, so around 1970 my neighbor's 4 year old was bright and loved Sesame Street more than cartoons. What he could do was amazing! Not unimportant he had two loving parents and as mom re-entered the work force I got a part time gig for maybe 50¢ an hour.
So that was daytime and at night we got quality non commercial broadcasting, classical music, documentaries and Firing Line which was based conservative journalism at the time. The idea was it would be viewer supported completely at some point the government was just giving it a jump start.
Because PBS was weaponized as a political tool. The Republicans could have fixed it but the fucking worthless RINOs were too busy stealing to do their job.
The instant they glossed over the DNC fucking Bernie Sanders was the last time I tuned in. They covered it as “allegations” spending about 20 seconds on the topic as if it were a footnote.
Thank you for tuning into Books on Books on Books. I'm Providence St. John filling in for Charles Dorrington who is himself filling in for Clementine Ryderwood who is on sabbatical researching for his newest short film about Transgendered Maori tribespersons.
Even back then they were still leaches being funding by tax dollars meanwhile conservative radio used the free market and talent like Rush to become larger than NPR could ever dream of.
I have a conservative friend who only listens to NPR and PBS. He absolutely hates Trump based on what they say. I have been working extremely hard to convince him voting for Biden would be a huge mistake even though we live in Texas and it probably won’t matter.
After doing his taxes yesterday he sent me a text saying he hoped I didn’t think he supported any of the insane Democrat policies. So I think he may be coming around although he will always hate Trump due to NPR/PBS propaganda.
AND CAH TALK!
I still listen to their reruns on Saturday mornings. That show has aged very well.
If every bit of public broadcasting was like Fred Rogers (who pretty much saved PBS by himself) - I'd be okay with that.
But good luck finding that one-of-a-kind altruistic kind of person again.
The problem is that they hid behind Mr.Rogers and Big Bird. Its the same "think of the children!" argument they always use to protect their side.

Left leading I could handle that was moderately annoying. Full on communist propaganda that's tax payer funded? That would be a hard No!

Defund npr
Blame cowardly republicans in Congress for their continued funding.
This country moves rapidly left under Democrats and slowly left under Republicans.
As it is heartbreaking and morally bankrupt.

Yep. They introduced me to Douglas Adams.
Yup, I used to listen to it back in the 90's and enjoyed the shows they had then. I haven't really changed my politics but boy have they.

If I had back all the money I’ve donated to NPR over the years...it could buy me soooo much delicious Goya....
I don't even read it as NPR anymore. It's been National Pinko Radio for as long as I can remember.
...back when they played things like the Star Wars radio dramas.

I still listen to Peter Van de Graaffs show, Baroque Sunday and Concierto. But I haven't given them a dime in 20 years.

Nope, I am 56 and that was before my time
No, but I'm in my 20s

I learned about a lot of great alternative bands listening to NPR at night.
No
Yes, they used to be the only jazz music here, ever, and very good.
I find that I can enjoy the weekend comedy shows when there is a dem President but if it’s a Republican it is an impossible listen.
No.

2013 obama changed it to be marxist propaganda
In my mid-40s, lived in the US since the mid-90s: no, I don't remember.
