The reason why the Roman Republic lasted for so long was that, from time to time, they would hand absolute power and authority over to a dictator. The dictator could do ANYTHING they wanted, and no one could oppose them.

The dictator would return power to the senate when order was restored.

We need something like this in the US.

Every dictator until Caesar. But Caesar was murdered.
