Interestingly I had a similar conversation two days ago.
I'm ex Australian Army (back in the 80's), and was asked by someone if I thought we'd have a chance if we were invaded. I responded that we would have fuck all ... the best thing one could do in the face of a major invasion was run and wait for the yanks to turn up. I should note ... this is not to denigrate our Armed Forces, but Australia doesn't pay anywhere near enough to have a military that could withstand a major invasion.
The person I was talking to asked if that's what I would do and looked shocked when I said "Fuck no. I'm a soldier. I'd go and kill the enemy to give you time to take your family and run."
I think that if you really WERE a soldier (or marine, or sailor, or any other member of the military), as distinct from being a civilian in uniform, you never STOP being a soldier ... and you never lose the determination to protect your country.

Once a Marine, always a Marine
well said.
If you don't mind, the is literally my first chance to use this word properly to an Aussie. But thanks, you beautiful cunt.
LOL!
Not a problem mate ... always happy to help out a Septic Tank! :)
shit. You've got me on that one. Hopefully septic tank means something sweet and endearing. I'm betting not, though.
It's rhyming slang for Yank, mate ... so no worries!
