I used to tell people that my oath of service meant that I was willing to die for the freedoms of this country. But I'm old now and I realize the other side of that coin. The Pope said something like this at the start of the crusades. There was an understanding that if you die in the service of God, your place in Heaven was confirmed. The Pope decreed that if you kill in the service of God, your place is Heaven is also guaranteed.

Yeah it was propaganda at the time, and it worked.
