For me, it has to do with the things that come from your face being held in. Cloth masks do nothing but keep you from coughing in someone's face. I can handle that myself, thank you.
Masks are a joke if a bandana is a valid substitute.
But... that's not it, it's not just about coughing, whenever you breathe you release particles when you are sick, same with you breathing from your nose, which is why you have to cover both the mouth and the nose.
Bandana isn't a valid substitute either, the CDC has recommended cloth as a substitute due to in the first few months of the pandemic masks being impossible to get. Is it as effective as a mask? Absolutely not. Is it better than nothing? Absolutely yes.
I didn't feel like giving out a detailed explanation, so I guess thank you for that.
As far as a bandana being a valid substitute, all of the mask mandates say that it is.
edit Just wondering your take on this: If this disease is so infectious that a mask is needed, why are the tests performed the way they are? You figure that they could take a mouth swap, or conduct it like any other viral test...instead of having to basically touch the blood/brain barrier.
Blood-brain barrier is one of the easiest ways to confirm as other methods are not accurate yet. You see this often with new tests and experimental drugs, the area of effect is always blood-brain barrier as it is easy to target and conclusive.
