Going down memory lane tonight, just thought I'd share this with you Pedes. I'd say throughout my youth I was fairly apolitical.
I was attending a typical lefty college and made the mistake of taking one of those ethnic study type classes. This was almost 20 years ago.
So I was sitting in a small discussion group lead by a TA. And he was talking about the inner cities, crime, and how crime was justified due to "systemic racism". Now, this was the first time in my life I heard someone say crime is justified.
I had never spoken up in that class until that point, but for some reason that comment just really sat the wrong way with me. So I said "dude, come on. That's crazy. Crime is a choice. Nobody commits crimes because they have no other choice."
Now, this was how naive I was back then. I expected most people in the class to agree with me. Nope. I heard a collective gasp. Some girl speaks up and says "You can't say that. There are people that have to commit crime so they can eat."
So I say "Nobody is starving in America. There's always a choice other than crime."
So she asks me what choice they have.
And I said "I don't know. Go play basketball and try to make the NBA?"
Louder collective gasp, and girl saying "That's racist!"
Granted it was fairly stereotypical. But the point I was trying to make is that it's more racist to "expect" people to commit crimes because they have no other choice. By allowing such thinking within a group of people, you lower expectations and just perpetuate a cycle of crime, poverty, and racism.
It was funny because after class a guy came up to me and says "Man I totally agree with you but I wouldn't have the balls to say it."
I just recently remembered this story because as crazy/stupid the left was back then, it's gotten so much worse. Imagine if I said the same shit in a college class today. They'd kick me out of school.
Thanks for that. It's good to hear what convinces people.
I was fairly apolitical too, and remember some RA led diversity session that was just so fake, irrational, lame, negative, and hateful. And as soon as I found out other people in authority (i.e., media and government positions) actually agreed with what made the RA session so lame. I was set against that error.
If you would have said 'FBI crime stats' they would have lynched you.
I think this is the problem why the right has lost the cultural war. Despite knowing that they are correct, they don't have the spine to stand up until it's too late.
Good for you to speak up! Thanks for sharing the story!
lol the second thing you said was completely racist.
Maybe they should go to that school and the discussion group could pay for it.
The only response to this kind off thing is to ask "would it be okay for an ugly person to rape somebody? After all they are systemically oppressed and may not have another choice in life to express themselves sexually"
