Embalming came about during the civil war when they had to preserve the bodies long enough to be transported (by wagon) back to their home states so they could have a viewing and proper funeral. After the war, they had to convince people to still buy their services so they wouldn’t go out of business. But yeah. It’s not natural and pretty useless in today’s day and age.
