And they have no job or money because they decided to stay on unemployment instead of returning to work when offered and their employer replaced them with someone who actually wanted to work.
I have a friend that I play video games with that got fired and has been collecting unemployment checks for months and hasn't searched for a job once since he "makes more now than he did working".
Don't hate the player, hate the game. If the benefits wouldn't be so ridiculously high more people might be motivated to actually work again. I work two well paying technical jobs and know people making almost what I make off of the current benefits by doing nothing... the aid needs to be cut off.
And this right here is why I strongly oppose any increase in unemployment whatsoever. I hate it for the people who lost their job, but with no unemployment you'll fight for your right to work a whole lot harder.
Myself and 90% of my co-workers were laid off when NYC shutdown. I lost a job that paid a base of six figures plus a commission plan. I've been on 36 zoom interviews since (more than half of those were for jobs with employers I would never ever consider even looking at before Covid) I have 2 job offers with no start date (earliest estimate is maybe sometime in September) while the extra $600 a week has helped it's barely enough after taxes to cover my basic living expenses. I've been tapping into Savings and eventually going to start liquiding my brokerage account and if I don't get a paycheck soon it's going to get ugly. Not everyone is a ex-grocery worker sitting in their parents house playing video games. So how much harder do you suppose I should look??
Unfortunately this is the case for many. It's a broken welfare system and if people can skirt around the law to use it to their advantage why wouldnt they? Human default is laziness and when you reward laziness you just get more of it. These lump sum payouts are ridiculous and it should be a matter of tax incentivization with negative tax to make up a set minimum. It also has to do with illegal immigration and visa work programs which lowers real wages for most working Americans. It's all connected.
We actually had an interview set up and the kid backed out cause unemployment paid as much. Total loser. Will amount to nothing with that go get it attitude.
Not at all, but there are a LOT of people who had that opportunity and actively made that choice. You might be underestimating how many fall into that category but I personally know a ton of business owners who had that exact situation across a wide variety of industries. That rug pull for those people is going to be the next crisis when the federal benefits end.
EDIT: Just to append to that, a good portion of the current unemployment numbers are people that could have returned to work when their employers either reopened and/or received PPP when contacted and offered to return to work said "No thanks, I'm good". I have little to no sympathy for anyone who made that decision.
Unemployed here. My job has been destroyed by a commie governor. Have not received any help. Could use it to buy food and pay bills. Not all of us are pieces of shit.
i hear you. My business took a massive hit and my husband has taken a temp job to get us through until things hopefully pick back up again. I don't know where you are, but in my area there are a ton of jobs open that, while not career track worthy, would help pay the bills for anyone that is willing to take them.
People in your situation, I certainly feel for. I'm strictly talking about people who had a choice, you didn't and that sucks. The extra benefit was intended for people in your situation. Others that are taking it didn't necessarily need to.
Understood. Sorry for being critical of your post. It isn't anyone's fault but the Governor's in my state. It is criminal what this governor has done to people here. As far as the leaches go, how they get unemployment checks is beyond me. How those benefits amount to equal what people like myself are owed is confounding. My income has been eliminated. I have earned less than 20% of my yearly income and we are nearly in August. The leaches have been given a free pass. I cant help but think registered republicans are likely the ones being investigated for fraud or having their benefits denied or delayed with no explanation.
Thing is it's not even really considered or falling under "fraud"; it's a well known fact that people are taking the option to remain on unemployment and it's not being questioned, in fact, it's being encouraged, which makes me believe that's all part of the plan, more people permanently on the unemployment rolls and incentivized to do so.
Okay as someone that was in the employment industry shame on the employers for not reporting them to state unemployment. Failure to return to work in all states is an automatic violation and stoppage on benefits. It's also a federal guideline. Some states even have an easy online reporting system that takes about 10 minutes to do. Also if someone is making more on unemployment plus the 600 that means they made about 52k a year or less. I can't think of any jobs that require years or months of training for a specialized skill in that salary band...
Also I agree that the extra 600 should have been based on the salary if the individual. Us employees that were making in the 6 figure range and can't find work aren't exactly swimming in a pile of cash lighting cigars with $100 bills
I personally know of 3 people whom I am very well acquainted with that are not going back to work because the unemployment bennies are better than where they worked. They're better off not working.
well in 2 weeks that gravy train ends and 1000s of people will flood the market. Then the crap will hit the fan when those same idiots are crying that Gov is mean because they took away 2400 a month...
I think you are taking it personally, and making his comment into a personal attack. I am here in Vegas, there is a large majority out of work relating to the gaming/entertainment industry and for the most part are fighting returning to work. If you are fighting to stay out of work because the benefits are juicy, then this meme and his comment are directed at you, if not then I hope you are hanging in there!
Even less than $25 is fine if it means you have a job to continue doing over all the other people who are looking to find a new job when benefits run out
You sure seem in the dark about how many employers decided to just shut down because they couldn't restaff when their furloughed employees were happier staying home on unemployment and didn't want to come back.
Thousands in the service industry were making more money every week with the $600+ benefits and their former employers who were already struggling to come back couldn't compete with that.
This is a huge issue up North in Cuckistan. Receivers of the massive benefits turdeau is giving out have 0 incentive to return to a job where they will actually make LESS money.
And that's why if there is any kind of extension to the unemployment relief it isn't just a flat $600 for everyone. Should be capped to not exceed what your previous job paid. I work in a steel mill where I make more working than on this unemployment but we've had 9 weeks of layoffs since march and the extra $600 was a huge help. We are being told we will likely be laid off most of august which is after this $600 ends and is going to be rough. Going from making slightly less per week on unemployment to making barely 15 hours worth of pay a week.
So make it where it scales with your pay so people will be willing to return to work and the people laid off with no choice still receive aid. It's not like I can just go apply for jobs for a week then quit and go back to my mill for a few weeks then get another job for a week etc. Nobody around here hires laid off steel mill workers because they know the mill is a better job and you will quit the second you're called back.
But you are not the kind of employee that my comment was referencing. I absolutely support the relief money for anyone that hasn't been offered a return to their job. That's the intended purpose. My beef is with the ones who were given the chance to come back to their jobs and didn't.
I've personally seen several businesses pack it up, just because they went through a big deal to get approved for PPP funding and then couldn't re-open anyway because they didn't have the staffing. And now those faithless employees are starting to whine because the funds are about to dry up. I'm not sympathetic to them.
I wish you all the best. My beef isn't with people like you. It's just that as a business owner myself, I'm on the other side of the equation and I know what some employers went through to try and do right by employees that wound up screwing them over for a few more bucks for a few weeks.
I am a business owner, so please spare me the indignant outrage. I know that we are not above taking less than glamorous temp jobs to keep the lights on and food on the table while we ride this thing out. There are plenty of jobs open if you aren't too proud to take them.
I guess that depends on what your definition of survival is. My definition is the willingness to eliminate our unnecessary expenses and live frugally while we put extra hours in every day to try and get our business momentum going again. My husband applied for a part time job and was hired within two days. He hasn't worked for anyone but himself in over 20 years, but he's doing what he needs to do to keep our bills paid. I suggest everyone try to do the same. There's no shame in honest labor during a time of crisis.
the smart ones will. I personally know 3 different people who did not. They've been collecting since end of March. Going to be a big tax bill come next year
Don't think so. Me and most of my coworkers had a partial claim filed on our behalf by our company. Everyone else had 17% withheld as requested but the state unemployment office wouldn't do that for me even though I asked 3 times.
Anybody who remained working during the shutdowns should get a tax break greater than the amount that the people who just collected unemployment got... as a matter of fact, let's instead give everybody who remained working a payroll tax holiday. It was everybody who remained working who kept the country alive, they need to be thanked.
Hell, I've been still going to the office even though no one is there. I had to do janitorial shit because they cancelled the cleaning people, made sure the fleet vehicles were taken care of, and processed the mail as well. All with no extra benefit to me. Got to keep this ball rollin'. I'll be pissed if they try to pull some shit next year.
That’s why if you take unemployment (in general, not just during the pandemic) unless you absolutely no other choice have to, have them take your taxes out ahead of time. Save your future self some grief
Somebody clear this up for me, never been on unemployment but did get the stimulus check, been working through this whole shit storm and my buddy who quit who worked with me (or was fired I should say for terrible performance) has been getting unemployment and making more than I have. Ironically he asked to borrow $50 and it’s been 2 weeks since he promised he’d pay the next day when his “check cleared”. Saw him wasted at the bar and he almost started a fight with a couple of our friends for being so drunk. Then he Shoved his dads buddy who was there, real shit show. He told me to shut my fucking mouth when I was trying to calm him down, and he’s not a big guy, he thinks he can take on people twice his size but our buddy was gently manhandling him and he’s smaller than I am.
Anyways, if he can’t pay me back or hold down a very easy job, how the hell is he going to pay taxes on this shit? And do I have to pay tax on the stimulus which I used to but a handgun on these trying times?
First of all, you're friend sounds like a dickhead. He is going to owe the IRS. And pretty sure you don't pay taxes on the stimulus, but it gets held against next year's tax credits/deductions
Thanks for the heads up on the stimulus check. And you’re right he’s super entitled, whined like a bitch when I answered his call tonight saying I had other plans and can’t take him where he wants to go when he could have gone there on his own as he has a car. He just wanted to meet up with us to go somewhere we didn’t want to go so he could hook up with one person while we wouldn’t know anybody there. No logic to it. Of course he was personally offended when I said no and he hates trump for reasons he can’t explain, funny cause he claims to be all about the groups interests not the individuals yet the group didn’t want to deal with his shit.
But thanks for that, I’ll be sure to get my finances in order and see if how I can maximize deductions for the check, even if out of pocket, was totally worth buying this gun. Had a dead kid turn up in our apts loading dock few weeks ago and bullet fly through window on 18th floor.
But I’m gonna tellem he needs to check into rehab, He’s been holding our friends in emotional limbo by vaguely threatening his own life. I know he doesn’t mean it but I’m not taking that chance, and there’s only so much we can all do. It’s fucking with our own lives and frankly we are sick of hearing the cry wolf bullshit but would never forgive myself if I dismissed it and he followed through.
Thanks for the heads up and reading, no need to reply but if you have good advice on what to do, it’d mean the fucking world.
So the government ruined your job and made you unemployed. Then they gave you extra free money, your own tax money mind you. Now you have to pay taxes on the free money they gave you, which was funded by the taxes you already normally pay. Also you may not have a job to go back too and all the food is more expensive. Socialism in action.

There's no justifying any sort of closing of anyone's business either.

All the taxes in this country. What the hell is happening.
Guess that's when my pasty ass would start identifying as a Nubian kang.

I feel for you man. If you’re a Cali Pede, DM me. I love all the pedes but us Cali pedes are getting curb stomped.
Where you live?
I dont want to dox myself by leaving breadcrumbs here. Sorry Peppers!
Thank you! That's very cool.
Just as Pelosi planned it.

Exactly.

UMMMMM....... you can request they take taxes out for you.
How many people do you think actualy do that?
the smart ones will. I personally know 3 different people who did not. They've been collecting since end of March. Going to be a big tax bill come next year
oh yah no doubt, I just think the dummies out number the smart ones. Going to be a lot of reeee'ing next year at tax time im certain
Yep, I know 3 as well
I would guess around half
That’s what I did. It’s very easy to select the option too.
That was a very easy choice for me. Hell yea take 10%. I don’t wanna think about that next year. I guess immediate gratification types?
Or those who can’t afford their core bills otherwise, anyone who takes it for extra spending cash is just fucking themselves
Tried. State refused. April's gonna be fun
Some states are waiving it, maybe yours is one?
Don't think so. Me and most of my coworkers had a partial claim filed on our behalf by our company. Everyone else had 17% withheld as requested but the state unemployment office wouldn't do that for me even though I asked 3 times.
Ah okay
Not only did I request taxes taken out, I set up automagic deposits into a savings account to save now for taxes later.
I know A LOT of Canadians that are going to have this problem. They were approving EVERYONE for the relief cash.
$2k a month at 20%+ in taxes owed, for 2-3 months so far.
Anybody who remained working during the shutdowns should get a tax break greater than the amount that the people who just collected unemployment got... as a matter of fact, let's instead give everybody who remained working a payroll tax holiday. We'll get taxed more to pay for it...

Not for people who over claim (like M5 or even M99) so that nothing comes out up front. You'd be surprised at how many do that.
Early prediction - "we'll forgive you the tax burden on your Bat Flu checks if you vote us into office and get rid of Teh Bad Oranj Man."
