Well in our case, going out to drink on the weekend with friends was our thing and we'd enjoy the occasional joint. When she moved in with me we began to drink and smoke more. I wouldn't say we were addicted by any means. I think that she used it as a coping mechanism and I just went along for the ride, as I never smoked and rarely drank before we got together.
When we had children and those activities slowed down and inevitably stopped, that's when I think we really started to see each other clearly for the first time. Looking back, I don't think we would have gotten so serious if regular alcohol and marijuana use weren't involved as much as they were. Since we split up, I returned to my sober lifestyle. Stopping drinking came easily but it took me years before I was ready to quit smoking.
Many people don't realize that sex does the exact same thing. It drugs you, and prevents you from seeing reality clearly. There is a reason the tradition was to only have sex after marriage.
Oh yeah and we were having lots make-out sessions and lots of very passionate sex during those early years; more times in the average week than I'd had in my whole life prior to that relationship.
