Mask wearing is all predicated on a lie that local, state and agency leaders have admitted. First and foremost, they have unequivocally stated that only 1 or 2 specific masks eliminate Coronavirus transmission. If you don't have that specific mask, you've moved past elimination and onto mitigation. In order for a mask/face covering to effectively mitigate transmission, it must be of a specific thickness. The CDC website outlines how thick, and how it must be worn.
Somehow, the specificity of thickness devolved into "just throw your T-Shirt over your face and we'll let you in the store." If no one is checking to see if your mask is appropriate, then we're no longer talking about mitigation. We're talking about security theater. Have something on your face to show compliance and everything will be fine - even if you happen to be transmitting the virus.
I should also note here that there has been no study conducted which concludes that mask wearing is more effective than sneezing/coughing into the crook of your arm, nor has there been any conclusive study as to how contagious an asymptomatic person may be (since they are not projecting droplets out through sneezes/coughs.)

I used the report a few weeks ago to get the mask requirements relaxed in my school district. I went straight to the Superintendent with it. They were initially requiring that we weary them at all times. We work after the kids are gone so there was only two of us in the building, but the supervisor was going around threatening to send us home without pay for not wearing a mask while working by ourselves in a room.
They're going to try making the school age care kids wear them from 6am to 6pm. Ha! Good luck with that.
I was able to get the mask rule relaxed to ther point of them not being required unless we're unable to maintain a six foot space. I haven't seen the supervisor since I went over his head. Nor have I had to wear a mask while working.
My understanding is that the study of "mask effectiveness" is based on old, old, data of 'flu transmission. (Source: red-pilled MD in city/state that's so blue if these 'leader' loonies were balls they would explode.) Point being, your last paragraph is right on the money, fellow 'pede.
Nobody really knows. Mom's 91 and high-risk, so I bought her a fitted P95--stops virus particles and plus I can politely request her to do the drywall!

It was basically, "I get that they don't need to wear one, but they should so their supporters will stop trying to fight it and also wear one." Literally justifying blatant propaganda. 'The only reason why you should wear a mask is to encourage others to do the same.'
We all knew it anyways. It explains why film makers including Boeing have the people being interviewed wearing masks.
