The Anglican church has been progressively removing said formalities, dumbing things down, and abandoning the tenets of their faith, all in the pursuit of appealing to current trends.
And yes, you are absolutely correct that appealing to the masses tends to lead to short-term popularity.
There are Anglican parishes out there that are resisting this trend, but are few and far between, and rapidly shrinking to boot. The Anglican church as a whole has been taking the (highly effective, sadly) approach of not fighting things too hard, just waiting until priests die and replacing them with more "progressive" ones.

Incompetence in church leadership is rampant. For some reason, no one ever thinks pastors need to be vetted before they start talking about the most important thing you're supposed to hear all week.
We always had trial periods, and never hesitated to tell people to get lost. Then again, the latest group gave in to the tyrants, so . . .
Could also be brainwashing. There's a lot of weak minded people in this country, and they're easy to control with fear and lies.
I know a lot of church people who have always been concerned with being cool, and these are the same people who are spewing the Satanic doctrines. If they rode a fixed gear bike in the 00's, odds are their doctrine isn't sound. If they always are on the up and up with fashion, odds are their message is likewise focused on worldly things.
Wouldn't have thought it applied to people already going against the usual, but I guess everyone's breaking point is different.
