The studies are inconclusive. Despite the fact that the vaccines have been in frequent use for decades, the disease has not gone away. Immunity to it seems to dissipate very quickly, requiring frequent inoculations. That's why we see new outbreaks every few years.

Fairly often, people who have suffered from the disease do develop a stable, lifelong immunity, but so far it has been impossible to isolate the resistance factor that produces this immunity. It doesn't appear to be genetic. For now, the best recourse is to keep a fresh stock of vaccines and use them regularly.
