Change up your drills and work with a friend (you go, he goes). Work single fire or low round count drills. I shot 250 rds yesterday in about 3 hours which is about half what I usually do. I worked on mostly draw speed and target transitions.
I got 1000 @ $0.47/round about a month ago randomly from an obscure site I’d never heard of who happened to be in stock and like 3 hours away from me. Now, all they have is $1.07/round
Cabelas has Herters for .33/rd. $99.99 for 300. Dont let anyone tell you its shit ammo. Its repacked S&B. Good stuff if not a touch dirty, but an AR is designed to run like a dirty whor...girl.
The three main benefits of 5.56/.223 are the cost per round when plinking, the lack of recoil in full auto, and the low weight allowing you to carry more. If you're talking about self defense effectiveness, you're limited to semi-auto already so why not use something that fits the role well? Military doesn't use 5.56 in semi auto service rifles. 30-06 or .308 are much more appropriate.
As a hunter, you're not going to catch any self respecting person using .223 fmj. Hollow point .308 is far more effective at making the first shot count.

If you don't have select fire as an option, you might as well use a more competent round. It's the difference between a level 3 plate being able to take multiple hits and needing a level 4 plate to stop 1. The recoil isn't an issue for single shots.
Was gonna recommend a site for anyone who may want to purchase more that I recently used to get a somewhat reasonable price on 1000 rounds each 5.56 and 9mm but they’re drained apparently. Nice stockpile.

As you seem to enjoy a pile of freedom seeds, Id like to introduce you to my plan. Its pretty tough now with the chinaflu... but as youll see that doesnt matter too much.
Every month, replace what you shot at the range +1 case for either your most common rifle or pistol caliber. Swap back and forth. Soon you will have the necessary seeds to plant a forest of freedom.
